How to reg a car bought from the main land
Discussion
its easy well notif you believe the DVLA.
One by car that you are after, have it MOT'd if required in England, Taxed in England with your name and address on the V5. (The V5 goes to Swansea and you get copy sent to you with your details on it or they send a cert of permanent export, which is no longer needed)
Two it can be easier to buy car and get the V5 if used given to you and you drive home and tax the car here and get the new V5 with the Tax etc.
If a new car, get the dealer to send the paperwork to the DVLA at Coleraine and not Swansea will save a lot of time and effort.
Hope it helps, it took me some time this August doing the same thing and I knew what to do.

As Colin says its relatively easy as we have more DVLNI offices per head than DVLA have. Better still leave it registered in England/Scot/Wales and pop over for a holiday once a year to tax it. As long as you have relations or family to register the keepers address at. You will look like a tourist here then and a better attitude from PSNI when stopped. As long as you can do a good scouse accent!
Are there any insurance implications in having a cat registered at one address (e.g. mainland UK) and kept at another (e.g. NI)?
On aside note (& apologies for thread hijack), I've been thinking about getting a personalised registration from England which is on a certificate and the hassle in getting it onto my car is ridiculous. In my case it seems like the easiest thing to do is buy a car in England, register it with the new reg to an address in England, then import to NI. Much easier said than done...

All you really have to do is fill out a V55/4 with all the relevant information from the V5 you get with the English Reg car, and hand it over the counter at any LVLO (Local Vehicle Licensing Office) with a cheque for 6 or 12 months RFL and they'll give you a new number and tax disc over the counter. The new V5NI will follow in the post about 2-3 weeks later. I know this 'cos I do it almost every week with cars I buy from England.
