In a nutshell, as I was returning from a long day at work on Thursday, there was a cop blocking my driveway waiting on me to return home. He approached me and said that I had a neighbor complaining to the police station that I was waking them up at 5am when I left for work, due to my exhaust being loud. He asked if he can do an exhaust loud test in an isolated area, so I followed him down the road. My exhaust readings were at 89db while ticking over and 100db at 2,000 RPM. The max for Bury St Edmunds is 82 dB. I currently have a modified Corsa Sport Exhaust on my 6.0L Pontiac GTO / Vaxhuall Monaro. The stock exhaust is almost just as loud.

Well it seems like I need to get this taken care of soon. If I get tested again for it, the cop mentioned I will be prosecuted and they wouldn't be able to let me off the hook. Besides, I really do not want to wake up my neighbors at 5am.

Does anyone have any suggestions on reducing 20dB on my exhaust, or decent shops that can do so? This law is just crazy, it's almost impossible to quite down a 6.0L vehicle. I wouldn't doubt if this car is over 82dB right out of the factory.

Hi Chris, sorry to hear you've have had a brush with the law already!!! As for db levels and as far as i am aware (though i stand to be corrected if i'm wrong) but there is no db level for cars in the UK (more of a nuisance thing)... Db levels are certainly not part of the British MOT, just condition and emissions... I reckon, its just a grumpy neighbour with a bee in their bonnet kicking off (probably a counciler or something)... My Ro must be at the same level of db as yours and i've not been pulled yet, in fact during the summer i was on the A11 approaching the Thickthorn round about and as i went under the A11 passover at the same time as a traffic cop, when we came out the other side the cop turned and smiled at me (i have to add i didnt give it the biggen but the old V8 was rumbling and popping with overrun)... However, if you are concerned and you don't mind a drive to Norwich take your car to Power and Performance, Mark will advise and sort you accordingly - he is used to Ro's, he done my exhaust (CAT back)... Drop me an email if you want anymore details, but i would certainly get some more advise before spending money that may not be necessary!!!

As said there is no law that states how loud a car exhaust should be (there is for motorbikes however). What they'll do you for I imagine is nuisance e.g.

Environmental Protection Act 1990

Section 79 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA) states that the following noise matters constitute a “statutory nuisance”:

“any animal kept in such a place or manner as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance."

"noise emitted from premises so as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance."

"noise that is prejudicial to health or a nuisance and is emitted from or caused by a vehicle, machinery or equipment in a street or, in Scotland, road.”

Could you an exhaust bung for early mornings?

I do know that the BIB are cracking down on noisy exhausts in the BSE area but as stated there isn't actually a "law" relating to it but only guidelines. Not wanting to split hairs but how did he take the reading as the "guide" is 1 metre from the tailpipe at an angle of 45 degrees, if he was square on the the tailpipe he would of got a higher reading. If you have an i-phone you can get an app for a decibel meter.

Motorcycle silencers must have some sort of 'O.K. for road use' stamp on the silencer, otherwise it could be a nick. It would seem strange to me if the law differentiated on this between bikes and cars?

I can also highly recommend Mark at Power and Performance as above. He made a full stainless system for our Dodge Ram in the summer. I said I wanted a deep v8 grumble, but not silly loud. He got it absolutely spot on - it sounds ace! He also gave a lifetime warranty; the car before me was in for it's free yearly service, where he basically just checks it over and replaces rubbers etc if required.

These systems are popular amongst the Monaro crowd, though it is an expensive system at around £2K... Good proposal nonetheless, best of both worlds - deafen the neighbours out of spite then when the BIB turn up, hit the button and say i don’t know what they are complaining about hehe

I "think" it's £600. The £2.6k is for the exhaust plus £2k "sports pac" above.

Might be worth giving them a call.
