Yes, the cheque bounces and the bank details of your account are sent to the cheque issuer.

Might be worth talking to your bank before you totally dismiss it as a scam. Mother-out-law works for a bank and they can set up a seperate bank account for said cheque to be paid into and that way if it bounces, your account and money are un-affected and if details do go to cheque issuer, what will they get? no money, thats for sure! Besides, banks have a duty of care as you're entrusting your money with them so if it is a scam they'll have the details of the cheque issuer to pass on to authorities.

Banks have been known to clear cheques then change their minds... it could be a fake cheque. It's odd enough to buy a car sight unseen from another country, but even if they did, the normal way to pay would be CHAPS.

It might be worth asking PH bosses if this is a known scam - they may be aware of somebody from Spain trying it on.

As others have confirmed, it's definately a scam.
When trying to sell my brother's car on PH, I had two or three similar email.

STEER WELL CLEAR!

You could cash it and see what happens - but check they won't bill you for a bounce, which would make the experiment unworthwhile.

An couple of months back I sold an car to an buyer from Japan, now this fellow used an U.K. based intermediary for the inspection and collection paperwork details. Seems odd that your overseas buyer is not doing something on these lines to me. Personally I wouldn't entertain the offer you speak of without this type of assurance.

And therein lies the scam. You send 1,000 Euros, then the cheque bounces. QED. Scam proved.

Play dumb - say you're still a bit overdrawn due to gambling debts so he'll have to pay the 1,000 Euros himself.

Reality check: If you were buying a car from Spain, would you send £1,000 to the seller and then tell him to send it to a shipping company? No you wouldn't, you'd pay the shipping yourself.

definately a scam, the same has happened to my friend two days ago. guy who works off shore said he would sne d money via paypal. money came but not via paypal, then there was an extra £800.the guy then send to send £800 to a shipping company along with the car. so my friend would lose £800 plus a car, stay well clear.
sounded dodgy at first as he said he would pay an extra £100 above asking price :\

Or you could say 'actually they've just told me there was a mistake and the cheque bounced, so I don't need to send you £12K back after all, but please send the £1K for my trouble anyway smile'
