I've had an Elise, ClioV6, bag of st 306gti6 and now the VX over the last 10 years. And it's now that I'm starting to think what's the point. The VX sits in the garage, and last year covered around 2500 miles and that's with me not being a 'precious' owner. I just can't be arsed with going out if it's raining, wet, icey, greasy.

There are very few occasions that you can enjoy yourself of have fun on the roads and the track days that I've done really haven't got the juices flowing. This brings me on to my current thinking. Would a clunky old ex military vehicle be a bad idea? I keep looking at old WWII stuff, LR 101, Unimog, Pinzgauer type things, even a classic landcruiser as seen on top gear looks like it could be a laugh. I don't mind fixing/repairing so the back to basics approach is appealing more and more.

Any closet Tonka toy owners out there?

Well I have been having 'dirty' thoughts over a Series 1 if that counts.....I know where there is a Safari that has stood for a long while and I am in the process of trying to 'free' it.

I had a major itch for a very long time for a Stalwart 6x6 amphibian. Managed to scratch it with a brief drive of one on a stag day near Thetford.

If you want to do some serious window shopping you should head over to milweb.net and check out the classified section. Just make sure you research the running costs very carefully if you do get seriously interested.

I very nearly bought an old Land Rover Series 3 last year but, the owner rejected my offer, which was a bit of a surprise as it was only a fraction under what it was for sale at.

I then looked at an early Land Cruiser, a Station Wagon which was the predecessor to the Amazon.
This one actually

An amazing car and would probably our perform anything else off road. I was put off by the lack of spares available and also the cost. The fact it still had 2" desert dust in the engine bay and no sign of an oil change in 20k miles didn't help!

I would suggest you go for a Land Rover. Parts are plentiful and very, very cheap.

An 88" (SWB) would be my ideal car.
Also try and get a pre 1973 model. Road tax is free and with a classic insurance, running costs would be small.
Be warned, though. They are noisey, uncomfortable and slow. Not designed for motorways.

Something like this would be my cup of tea. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1396093.htm

Or a light weight like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1339854.htm

Two 101,s here.....

Ropey road worthy examples can be had for between £2500-£3000. Its best you join the 101 club. Just to have access to there parts supply. As some parts are unique to the 101.

Pinzgauers on the other hand are ridiculously expensive for what they are. Early ones were petrol and hhorrendous on fuel. Late ones were fitted with a 2.5 diesel VW unit. prices range fom £7,000 up for an early one. Late one £16,000 onwards.

Forget the world war 2 stuff. Its be coming to expensive and collectable to be used as a bit of fun for off road.
