Foodie mate looking for somewhere special to take his partner for birthday meal. Brummells has been suggested. Any good? Any alternatives? [Preferably British/European cuisine, in the city, cost not a particular issue].

Thanks

James

There's The Last wine bar, Merchants of Colegate although this is now under new management and i haven't been there since it was taken over. There is also By Appointment, nice food but the whole experience is a little weird but in a good way.

They are all in the Colegate area of the city.

I concur with Thainy..The Last Wine Bar is great for decent food and even better wine.

By Appointment on the other side of the road is ermmm 'different' yep....food is good but I felt a bit uncomfortable there...

A newer place is Bishop's which is in the old Brasted's restaurant in the city. Owned by the 'Windsor Bishop Jeweller' people, it's meant to be one of the up and coming places...

Hope this helps

Another vote for Wildebeeste, very good, but lavender house is better. much better. if you're going for the best locally.

I am hoping that, now Richard Hughes has a stake in the Assembly House, the food there will be of the same quality as The Lavendar House.
If so it will be a great place to eat. All they need to do is sort the parking.....

Last wine bar is top, went in for a beer though few weeks back and was a bit staggered at the price of a pint!

Lavender house is near me, good reputation, but top dollar

Ellingham? Haven't been there for a while, I assume it's still the same people if it's Italian.

St Benedict's Restaurant on St Benedict's st is very popular with the older crowd.

My work colleauges are all "food and winies" and they love it. It is quiet and a bit bland , but classy enough.

I have had bad experiences at "The last wine Bar". Groups of drunken ex Yuppies (who should know better at their age) can ruin a good evening as the tables upstairs are very close together.

Merchant Of Colegate been taking over again?? When we were in there last year in the late summer? It had just been taking over by someone new.

Was in the Last Wine Bar last month was very good as always. Although make sure you request to sit downstairs, much nicer if you're going as a couple.

The Railway Tavern in Poringland (couple of miles out of the city) is one of our favourites - just make sure you have your steak nice and rare!

It's a ruby, not what OP requested, but our absolute favourite restaurant at the moment is Roti, near Sainsbury's petrol station in the city. Absolutely fantastic Indian/Bangladeshi food.
