Hi Chaps.

Well after being pulled over and given a £30 fixed penalty notice from the Plod for having a defective exhaust, meaning too loud I need to get a silencer added to bring the noise down a tad.

The db meter came out and it was measured at 92db at idle.

This is my track day toy and it hardly ever comes out to play on day to day roads so was gutted to get pulled for this.

I dont want to lose any performance so the silencer needs to be 3in in diameter and take the noise down a fair bit, it has to be no bigger than a cat though.

The car is a Skyline GTST 1996 Spec 2. Any suggestions on a good exhaust place I can take this too and have something made up.

Hmmm not sure they tested properly

The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2001
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/uksi_20010025_en....

State that

2. When—
(a) the vehicle is held stationary on a level surface such that there is an unobstructed area not less than 3 metres wide all around the vehicle; and
(b) the engine by which the vehicle is propelled is run at a constant rotational speed of 3/4 S,

the noise measured at 0.5 metres from the exhaust outlet at 45 degrees to the axis of the outlet pipe in a horizonatal plane, shall not exceed
101db(A).

Not sure where the 92dB comes from

Lowestoft mate.

The guy saw me from a spot near a roundabout and had already pulled out onto the roundabout before I had passed. Meaning he had decided to pull me over before he even heard my exhaust up close!

Then I knew he was going to pull me over so I went and parked in Asda.

He told me that the rule was the car was not allowed to be any louder than a standard Nissan Skyline with the standard exhaust on (Which is a rare thing anyway)

Sounds like he was a board copper mate, maybe the bakery had run out of doughnuts that day?

I wouldn't worry about it, I've been running my saff with a 3" straight through exhaust with only the rear silencer on now for a good few years without any probs. I bet a tenner you won't get pulled for your exhaust again!

Don't bother Del - it's illegal anyway smile

BTW the red upholstery in your car... looks a bit iffy to me - but we'll still have you at a PHEA event if you fancy a jolly - matching bookends hehe

The MOT rule states a reason for rejection on grounds of exhaust system emmiting a sound louder than that of standard equivilent make, model and spec. But it still comes down to tester discretion. Officially your car should fail an MOT but could have been changed for test. ;-) The police work off 'constructions and use' rules. If they didn't follow the rules for the test procudure fight your side!

This is very worrying as I also have a Skyline with an aftermarket exhaust and live in Lowestoft. I have got a bung for the exhaust and will now carry that around with me. Hopefully if I am pulled I can offer to fit the bung to avoid the fine.

By the way I have recently bought a decibel meter so if you do need to do any testing and would like to borrow it, let me know.
Cheer,
mf.

This didnt make an ounce of difference mate. I too had my bung with me in the car and offered to fit this there and then. But he just said no and wrote the ticket out anyway.

What car is yours mate I may have seen it.

Hi run MGCGT in lowestoft tested at the last snetterton day 110db whoops would not allow my ACT track tips to be used either to long which turns out to be rubbish. I got the DB down to 101db.
Although mine looks like a race car sofar have not been stopped, mind you it spends more time broken than driven.
I run twin pipes with single silencers at rear, but now changing to side pipes, which I am told a quieter ???? how come as there 5ft shorter but we will see when I get it back.
See you guys in town one day perhaps the boy and his mates can do a run in the TVR's with us sadly no tunnels around us!
