Saffron Walden Traffic Lights

Today, the traffic lights in Saffron Walden at High Street/George Street junction have been turned off. Apparently, following a "polution survey", the junction had easily the poorest air quality in Saffron Walden. It was deduced that the constant traffic jam at the traffic lights caused excess local polution and that removing the traffic lights would disperse the "problem". The result is that there no more congestion in Saffron Walden High Street, with traffic flowing beautifully...no one can remember why the traffic lights were originally put there now!

There has to be a lesson here for any "authority" proliferating traffic lights, traffic calming and traffic camera schemes?
