Hi people, decided, as you do, to get a project for the summer that me and the boy can have a little play at. Bought a 1977 Mk1 Reliant Robin and we are going to put a bike engine in it, I know a few of you have had experiences with such things and would be very open to any tips or advice. Such things as where to get a coupling for the driveshaft from? what would be a good donor bike etc. Never done anything like this before but got to be good for a giggle (check out some of the ones on youtube!!)

A mate and I were going to put a bike engine in a 2CV to take to Le Mans until we done some research and realised it'd probably tear the car in half!

R1 engines are pretty cheap, and seem to be a common choice for a BEC, so should provide plenty of spares/modified parts should you require it.

Good luck though, sounds great.

There was a guy who put a Honda Firestorm engine (1ltr V Twin) into a Reliant Kitten that won last year's Practical Performance Car £999 challenge. That looked like a better idea as it has 4 wheels

Kitten was the first choice, but in a sick way, I know the 3 wheel option is going to be a giggle, if you use a kitten you may aswell use any 4 wheel'd car. Apparently theres a kitcat place near thetford?? Tiger i think?? They maybe a good choice for a coupling. By the way, the R1 was my first choice but im swaying more towards a zzr1100 for the torque side of things. Maybe cheaper.

Good luck!!

I remember a friend of mine telling me he built a mid engined Pinto Robin in the 1980's, it would pop wheelies on demand!

I would limit the top speed to 50mph if I were you!

Anything faster in a Reliant Robin will make your nose bleed smile

Please don't do this...

I speak from experience, many, many years ago, an acquaintance of mine tried to put an MG Midget engine in a Reliant Robin against all advice and to cut a long story short it was a disaster and simply a waste of time and money. Have you ever driven a Bond Minicar? I have; a 250cc Villers engined beast. It was the most evil handling piece of crap at anything over 30mph (indicated).

If you want to make a three wheeler go faster, then make sure it has the single wheel at the back and not the front!

how about a pair of outriggers laugh . Seriously though, its really a project for my 13 year old son to teach him the basics of mechanics before he starts boarding school, a little bit of righty tighty and lefty loosey, so if anybody has got any good info it would be appreciated. How about you Gaz?? that little toy of yours must have brought up some similiar issues with regarding mating certain parts together.

i'll get the wife to test drive it, she knows everything so im sure driving a 180bhp, 400 kilo, 3 wheeled death machine, with drum brakes and no servo's wont be hard.

I don't know whereabouts you are in east anglia but a mate of mine specialises in bike engined cars and the bits that go with it. He's out the back of Stowmarket in Buxall. Might be worth giving him a shout to see if he can help. His name is Andy Bates and his website is here....

Just don't do it to a Reliant.......plenty of old Duttons and the like on the ebay to fit a bike engine to if that's what you must do...

Actually I think that was a TL1000 Suzuki engine

And he's done a bit more work on it now

Yep that's two TL1000 engines in there now

That's ok, glad he could be of help. He's similar to you, used to race bikes/crew a sidecar combo until he broke himself just a bit too much, got pensioned out of the fire service and is now passionate about bike engined cars.
