Yes its true, my poor little Austin 7 'Swallow' is belching oil smoke a plenty. It started from an overheating episode whic I thought at the time I had got away with. But steadily the oil burn has got worse and worse. Last time out in it, after a period of very prolonged ticking over in a Q, when I was able to 'put my foot down' I fairly obliterated the visibilty on the dual carriageway for a good half mile or so, by eck that was very dodgy indeed. Other drivers were switching on thier bloody lights! So this year the engine has to come out, about mid July I plan, for a rebuild.
Some have mentioned to me that I may have a couple of piston rings melted, well the engine sounds reasonable enough and compressions are good and even. Hey Ho! Its life.

EFA. You weren't racing the vicar's bicycle again were you?

By coincidence I heard from the guy who runs Lavenham today so I hope you'll be able to fix it for that (you have until the last BH Monday in August!)

Racing the vicars bycicle biglaugh well almost, thought I would do an speed trial and reached the dizzy speed of 37mph. Thought A7's were indestructible biglaugh

Lavenham is an very good show but dates clash with Gressenhall museum usually. The A7 engine comes out in late July, so might be back on road in August.

Sorry to here about the oily smoke! I had a similar experience with the TR7...and wondered if "they all do that"! Had a broken piston ring and was able to find a replacement engine for £100 (not a typo!). Everything fine now...just needed a new front crankshaft seal for £4! Hope to see you at some shows later this year! Toffer

Like all these things, we'd all stand in the pub, pint in hand going it's this or that. The head comes off and then and only then will you know that it's just a valve stem (smile) or a crack in the head (cry) etc.
