Had a browse around Specsavers and totalled up what my spec's would cost yikes

So where to go ? I can't seem to see anywhere to get a sensible price (sorry about the pun)

Can't you buy basic specs in the chemists for a tenner or so?

Yes, but using them I would still be as blind as a bat. Its a complex business buying spec's nowdays, if you want vision. Trouble is its also bloody expensive.

There's a guy in Burwell, Cambs, who makes lenses for several of the chains, but also has his own shop. He made lenses for my driving glasses for £25.

Dunno how bad your eyes are, but my Dad has just had some variofocals made from high-refractive plastic, all the coatings and new frames for about £140 I think.

Place is called Web-sight or something equally cheesy, shop is only open on Saturdays.

If you are in Norwich, I would recommend going in here to have a look.

I found them after I had bought my last pair of glasses and found the cost would have been halved !!!!!!!furious

Thanks for leads, unfortunately I am unable to wear contacts and lazer treatment I often think about, but am terrified that I will be the one in 100,000 whos op go'es wrong.

I will be having a look at the other two suppliers for sure, prices that some of the shops charge is beyond a joke.

Even going to the 'bargain' suppliers my prescription for varifocals with the required anti scratch coating turned into an 250+ pounds.yikes

I have now found an online supplier who can supply exactly what I want/need at half the price, and an full no qibble refund if I am not 100% happy with my new spec's. Result! www.glassesdirect.co.uk

If you've got a recent prescription, plus a pair of old specs that fit your head nicely (for measuring) then you could try

http://www.optical4less.com/

They are based in Hong Kong (!) but I got my varifocal specs within 2 weeks of placing the order. bendy unbreakable frames, thin lenses, photochromic, Total cost around £115, as compared to around £400+ from Vision Express or SpecSavers. I will shortly be placing another order for plain and tinted driving glasses (plain lenses) that will cost me around £20 each. Lens coatings, etc. are included as standard (not for tinted - pointless!)

Thanks for the lead, I gave up on the varifocals owing to the exorbitant cost and have now bought standard vision lenses into my old frames. The first fit were hopeless as the optician had got me written down for wrong prescription. Sorted now.

Looking at the frames in the high street I found them all to be crap really, and all outlets stocking the same frames as well. Lucky enough I picked up an advert' for some of the off high street outlets and they stock some really great frames. www.davidclulow.com

Well, my best friend has just opened up a new business (very well backed) delivering prescription specs from £20 a time.

Don't complain about any syntax errors or my rep for proof reading will be (more) dead.

Good luck smile
