Just wondering if anyone knows why their seems to be so many helicopters flying over stowmarket at night? needed to go to sleep early last night but the persistant noise of a helicopter that seemed to hover around our house for ages just kept me awake

This wasnt a one off, i remember last summer the same sort of thing on lots of occasions, so any one know why? I assume Stow isnt a den for theives and drug runners??!!

Might be Plod, getting footage for the next series of 'Don't steal cars because we can see you with our helicopter and there's no escape even if you run into some woods because we've got infra-red cameras'.

You know the sort of thing. Cheap sensationalist TV with a moral message to be good.

there's plenty of chopper action just up the road at wattisham (plods chopper, sea king, lynx, apache, plus visitors), perhaps they are just doing a bit of night flying, and using cars/people to check if the infra red targetting stuff works!

on a more serious note, i know plod have a lot of trouble with illegal raves in east anglia especially at easter and in the summer, and last year there were a few in the stowmarket area, so perhaps they were following up leads on one. (do you have a large back garden with a big barn? lots of new, rather unkempt friends?)

I'd say its Wattisham. Now that it's been designated the UK repair centre for all Apache 'copters...

Probably move them at night lest locals start taking pot shots with a 12-bore

I doubt a 12-bore would do much to an Apache. However my roof-mounted quadruple Bofors 40mm AA gun should do it! evil

you'd be suprised, they are pretty flimsy apart from the cockpit, so a twelve bore would do a fair bit of damage.

There used to be but I suspect they can pretty much do as they please at the moment with the way things are with our lads out at war.

Next time we meet up remind me to tell you about my nephew who flies Apaches for the USAF, he was the first allied aircraft to land at the then newly "liberated" Saddam Airport in Baghdad - his radio & most instruments had been shot out by a local taking pot shots with an AK47 - he still has the bullet that ricoched round the cockpit before dropping in his lap!
