Paying for Petrol with Credit/Debit Cards in East Anglia

Having received my Bank statement on Friday, I found that the day after using my card at that garage my Bank account was emptied in America over 2 days with several transactions until they reached my overdraft limit.

If you have brought petrol from the Fourwentways garage in Linton in the last few weeks and paid by card please check your bank statement. The owners have been arrested for skimming cards and sending the details back to Pakistan to relatives. This has happened to one of my friend's son the other week up there.
On reporting it to the Police, I was told they are aware of that garage, but are unable to do anything at the moment, so if you get petrol there use cash.

BP garage, formerly Q8, on the Huntingdon Road at Girton

ESSO garage in Trumpington

I thought this might be of interest - apparently it's also happened at the following cashpoints:
Tesco's in both Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds and a Shell Garage on Newmarket Road in Bury.

You may be ok. I had my card cloned at the Shell Garage along Newmarket Road in early Feb, I had the money taken out in Malaysia (around £450 but have now been refunded), I think the person in question does not work there any longer as there was a change over in staff around the same time....

I am trying to make it so I pay cash for fuel, but its quite difficult due to the amount I spend on fuel and have to claim back from work etc....

It's amazing that's been happening, especially with big named garages!!!

Always pay by card, and nothing like that has eveer happened to me thank God! But will be keeping an eye out in future!!

It's RIFE at SHELL They seem to employ a higher percentage of dishonest employees than the other petrol retailers. I won't use them now unless I can pay with cash.

A warning email went about late last week because the same happened at the Q8 garage in Fengate, Peterborough.

I think its rebranded BP now?!?

If you mean the BP garage next to Pizza Hut then yes. I have seen a number of internal work emails warning against cards being cloned at that petrol station. I used this garage a couple of weeks ago and it has just cost be £247.19 in Canadian Dollars!

A quite rightly. After all, if you can afford to run a car then you can afford to have the minor inconvenience of having no money. It is your own fault.

But if they see someone eating a banana then clearly you are running the risk of killing no less than 10,000 small children.

i noticed 39pence on my credit card statement from the local shell garage, no idea what it was for as i was at work that day anyway.

BP said they just supply the signs and petrol and that the garages are independent.
The Police said "you live in Norfolk, you should report this to Norwich"
The local paper printed the story.
An IT security expert who contacted me said that the money was being used to buy weapons for use in Sri Lanka.

At least some overseas authorities still pursue criminals.

It doesn't seem that the Banks/Visa/UK Police are doing anything to stop this widespead fraud. Best pat cash or use a completely separate account which you can walk away from in a hurry.

The problem with importing foreigners is that you import all their crime as well. They must think the UK is soft touch indeed. They could at least send you an AK-47 as a thank-you!

Regarding Shell at Newmarket Road Bury, the scam was being operated before christmas and only in the last 4 weeks are the cloned cards being used - mainly in Sri Lanka!
The offender 'disappeared' at Christmas time.
To date approx 400 (four hundred) incidences have been reported as people get calls from their banks...
