Last night two of my Son's best friends were killed in a car crash. They were only 18 and had everything to live for. Luckly (if ther can be anything lucky about this), my Son was out with some work friends last night, otherwise I dread to think.

It appears that they were pulling out onto the A17 near Fleet (Lincs) and they were hit side on by a women in a Golf. Their car then rolled several times before hitting a lamp post. They were dead at the scene. The thing is, last night was thick fog here, and I would assume that to roll a car several times the impact speed must have been fast. I don't know the facts, but it would appear to me that yet again this person had not slowed down and driven to the conditions. I know the woman was taken to hospital, but don't know if she is okay.

Please, please be careful out there. Such a waste of life.

I,ve just re read my post again, and it all comes across wrong. I,m sorry, as it sounds very self centred, and this was not the way I wanted. I can't start to think what their parents are going though right now. Its bad enough losing a parent, but to loss a child.

That is scary, it is almost two years to the day that my cousin was killed in car accident, again on a Sunday evening in fog and icey conditions. He was out on his 19th Birthday, hit some black ice going down a hill, lost control and hit a lamp post sideways, was killed instantly. In a Fiat Cinquechento (sp?) ie, very little protection. He was the only child as well, needless to say a family never really gets over such an event. I know no one else was involved, but as you say Ian, we all need to take extra care this time of year and take into account weather conditions.
It certainly stops and make you think when you hear this sort of news.

A terrible and tragic loss for the parents of these lads and of course family and friends. As a parent I cannot even begin to understand how these lads parents are coping this morning.

Our Son was involved in a huge accident when he lost control of his car on black ice, the road was closed for the morning whilst they cleared up the damage. Matts life was spared by the Grace of God.

That is horrible news Ian for you & your son. I hope that this sort of incident teaches us all to drive carefully in these nasty weather conditions & realise that it doesn't really matter if we're a little bit late for work/home/gym/PH meet just so long as we get there alive & importantly without killing or injuring anyone else. yes

The amount of people overtaking us yesterday on our way to Thetford in the thick fog & barely either missing us or the tractors hurtling towards them was crazy. Absolutely stupid driving - it does seem to escalate when the weather conditions worsen as people do think that going 70mph on a sunny dry day means taking that sharp bend at 70mph on a greasy damp foggy day & then they wonder why the car ends up on its roof or down a ditch.

My condolences to everybody that knew them.

I too am amazed at how some people drive in the fog. We were heading back down to London last night and the fog just dropped in (and vanished again at the M11, which is odd). We went as fast as we dared go, which was about 35-40 if it was a little clearer. We had a few poeple overtake us, and there was no way they could see if there was anything up ahead!
Just doing that speed we narrowly avoided some wildlife (or maybe it just avoided us?), so I can imagine how hard it would be to avoid a car you didn't realise was there. On the other hand, I just can't see how you could make a car roll and cause the amount of damage mentioned without being in a very heavy lorry or going (very) fast in a car - to the point where they wouldn't have been able to do much (except maybe break a bit earlier) without the fog.

I hope your son deals with it ok.

I'm sorry to hear of your's and your son's loss

Like you and others have said, people need to drive more to the prevailing conditions.

Such a waste, indeed.....

Tragic story Ian. Unimaginable pain for the parents.

There but for the grace of god go any of us. Should be a lesson for all of us to make the most of life, or as Burns put it.... 'Be happy while you're livin', 'cause you're a long time deed'.

So sorry to hear the news Ian.

The A17 has a terrible death toll, as do Lincolnshire's roads generally.

No need.

If there's any positive note to come from it, your son will probably be a more careful driver as a result, now that he's seen what can happen when it goes wrong.
