I've got the VXT tomorrow on what I hope to be another beautiful day. I was thinking about going to the coast, people have said Great Yarmouth, Southwold..etc but they're a bit far, I don't fancy a 160 mile round trip, I need to be back home at 4pm to take kitty to the vets.

What about the route for the Ian Beech memorial run - where did you guys go for that? I want to stay towards the north/north east of East Anglia as I live near Ely.
I'm not too bothered about sandy beaches, just somewhere stunning by the sea or water so I can take some good photos & probably get horribly burnt.

Any suggestions would be brilliant.

Hannah.

Straight to Kingslynn and take the coastroad Hunstanton to Cromer - lots of stops on the way. Wells - Sandy beaches and woods, Sherringham, steam railway. (Great little pub at West Runton where you can walk down to the beach), Cromer hill top carpark great for kite flying.

Morning Hannah,

The 'Ian Beech' run was to Hunstanton, which I would say would be your nearest bit of coast anyway. We stayed away from the busy end of Hunstanton, choosing instead the 'old' part of town near the lighthouse. This area has the better beach if that your thing and is a lot quieter. Hope you have a good day.

I would recommend the North Norfolk coast. I love it up there.
Head for Holkam beach. Completely unspoilt and if you get there early enough, not many people there because it's not signposted to the beach! The road right opposite the Victoria Hotel takes you there.

From Cambridge it's A14/ A11/ A1065 through Swaffham up to Fakenham and then B1105 towards Well-next-the-sea.

Another excuse to post up a couple of pics of Holkam Bay!

beware though, if you turn left and walk along the beach a few hundred yards, there's a sign warning you that naturists use that area!!

I'm going to leave early and head towards Hunstanton then turn right and do as much of that coast road as I can fit in. Grab an icecream along the way, bear the sun for as long as I can because having the roof on is unbearable in this weather - I could go in the air-conditioned MINI but it's only got about 0.001bhp in this weather with the aircon on.

That naturist beach sounds like fun too!

Stop for a sarnie somewhere along the way & take some photos to taunt Scott with when I get back. I wish he didn't have to work

I'd second this, a beautiful place and relatively unknown at present.

I'm near Ely too, may have seen (heard!!) me in a silver elise on sunny days giving it some beans.

Some pictures from my day yesterday.
HUNSTANTON:

OTHER PLACES:

I started off from Ely at 9:30am, meaning to leave at 8am but our new cat decided to try and throw himself out of the upstairs window as I was leaving. Then of course, phone rang, got sidetracked, an hour wasted. It was a really enjoyable day, steady pace, no heroics but lots of overtaking on the straight bits - lots of fun, it's so effortles in the VX, the MINI is good at overtaking but you have to plan ahead a bit more & wind her up, the VX just has the power for those times when you think "oooh just one more car then I'll pull back in". I made my way up to Kings Lynn then turned right and followed the road towards Hunstanton past Sandringham (which I must visit as it looked pretty amazing). Stopped at Hunstanton, drove through the town, saw the more touristy bits and thought "no thanks", carried on a bit towards The Strange Inn bit of town (does that make any sense) and found a lovely grassy car park & went to the beach & paddled in the slightly brown sea!

Checked my PH notes and carried on the coastal road right the way to Cromer - what a cracking road! Stopped off at most of the points mentioned but was put off by the £3.50 parking charges at them all! So turned around in the various car parks and carried on!

Started to get a bit hungry so stopped in Sheringham for something. Found a great parking space & went into the town for a sarnie. Came back with a few sticks of rock & some food to find that someone had thrown their bag of chips into the car - oh great. I was gone for about 5 minutes. Sitting in the car eating my sandwich & reading the paper, two yoofs walk past and say loudly "yeah nice car but rubbish alloys, it'd do better with 18s on that" - I resisted the urge to smack him with a stick of rock and drove on, getting rather sunburnt.

There were some really gorgeous villages in between Hunstanton & Sheringham & I'm badgering Scott to take a day off work so we can do the route again and maybe stop off properly at some of the places. I wanted to eat at the Kings Head near Titchmarsh (or similar sounding village) but the girls in there were incredibly snooty & I was 30 minutes early for food - they wouldn't serve me with a drink while I waited even though the outside tables were both eating and drinking - very odd! My excursion yesterday was just a scout for future visits and I'm really pleased that I'm only about an hour away from the sea. Thanks for all of the suggestions, it really helped me out.

Hannah.

Nice photos Hannah The beach at Hunstanton looks quiet. It won't be next week though, the schools round our way broke up today!

The other places you visited. Can I guess where they were taken?
1) Wells-Next-the-sea
2) Weybourne?
3) Muckleburgh collection
4) Cromer, cliff top car park

Top marks Gary!

I can't imagine how busy some of those beaches will be from today - think I did my trip at just the right time.
