No Wheel in Norwich
Discussion
From email I got today
Opportunity lost!
I am writing to you all out of a sense of despair. This morning, Norwich City Council turned down an application for the Norwich Wheel outside the Forum.
The Forum Trust had to fight to convince the owners of the wheel to even consider Norwich as a potential destination, as so many cities from Barcelona to Liverpool were battling for it.
The only spot WTA (the owners of the wheel) were considering was a city centre location, outside the Forum. It was to be installed there, or not come to Norfolk at all as other sites were not deemed suitable.
Norwich City Council have this morning, rejected it on the basis of it will lose public space, prevent pedestrian movement, the wheel would adversely affect the other buildings and detract from the amenities around it.
So, the opportunity to enjoy views of Norwich from a completely different perspective, and the economic investment the wheel would bring, has been lost.
So, even though 2500 people registered to go on the wheel, 6 councilors rejected it, 1 abstained. Not a single councilor backed it. How disheartening is that?
I feel, as a resident, and a business man, embarrassed of such short sightedness of the Council. I feel saddened that the Forum Trust bent over backwards to attract the investment from WTA, only to be told, by 6 councilors, to go away.
That is it for Norwich. All the work conducted by the Forum and WTA has been wasted. There are too many cities fighting for this wheel for Norwich given all the negativity, to be considered again.
What a missed opportunity.

Sorry John but I have to disagree, what a waste of money the hospital is shedding jobs as it has overspent and the proposal was to put up a fairground wheel for a vast sum of money only to be taken down again after a few months!! I suggest anyone that wants a view of the city got to one of the many tall buildings and look out of a window!!!
CAn I ask what you could have seen from it? The view from the top of the castle would be higher than the proposed height of the wheel.
I wouldnt pay for looking at the roof of City Hall.
I am disappointed that the councillors do not recognise the wheel as a vehicle to promote tourism. I think there could be better sites for it. I personally would like to see the area outside the Forum used for such things as professional street entertainers such as the ones that work outside The Punch and Judy in Covent Garden. Bring a more cultural flavour to Norwich.
I think it is a shame as there will be many other cities that snap up the wheel. I hope it is placed elsewhere rather than Norwich lose out.I also hope the company who own the wheel will donate some of the moeny raised from fares back into the community.
K
why the fck should we be wasting thousands (if not millions) on a poxy fairground ride when the nhs needs money and people are homeless? i know its from different budgets, but it sort of rubbing peoples noses in it isn't it?
If you want to go ride on a big wheel, visit pleasurewood hills, but don't ask my taxes to pay for it.
