Friendly MOT Tester

Does anyone know of a friendly MOT tester in the region?

I need someone who will "overlook" my numberplates when doing the test (I assume they look at spacing and fixing?)

Also, how much should I be looking to pay? I have never had one before.

Can't help you with an MOT tester in your area but I took my Chim to a small garage in Bedford 4 weeks ago, got chatting enthusiastically to the owner/tester who very kindly mentioned that I had actually put my legal plates on for the test and only swapped back to my normal ones once the test was complete.
I think if I'd gone in there and just let hom get on with it rather than show an interest in what he was doing and enthusiatically chat with him about the car he'd have failed me on it.

Befriending the mechanics is a very good idea. I only met one really miserable one, who'd just failed the last car for having a blocked washer jet. He duly failed my car with £400's worth of suspension faults - and took 90 minutes to do it.

While I was waiting I got chatting to another owner who recommended a different garage. I took it there and it went through first time

Yeah, thanks, just need to get time to make some calls!

Been backwards and forwards to Scorpion getting the exhaust, and then checking a problem which dissapeared when I got there
