Hotel Norfolk or Suffolk, nice but traditional food
Discussion
Hi,
We are trying to book a hotel for my in-laws (mid 70s but fit and active) for their golden wedding. We were looking at places like Dunston Hall - around a couple of hundred quid for dinner, bed and breakfast.
Unfortunately, my father-in-law has a very limited range of food he'll eat and modern menus with jus, pestos, pine nuts or similar, even garlic, will concern him. He would genuinely find it very stressful and the evening would be spoiled. Basically he wants steak. He would not feel comfortable asking for a steak that came with a sauce without the sauce.
So we thought a posh pub, like the Victoria at Holkham, but even those seem to do every thing "fancy".
So we are looking for a nice hotel with nice rooms that does simple food. Any suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks

Not sure about Dunston, few years ago OH and I popped in for a drink and it was rather run down and the chairs were really dirty in the bar.
I have the same probs as your father, mine being due to serious health problems.
If you ring the Victoria at Holkham prior to booking and explain your concerns re your father I am sure they would be very understanding and do all they could to help.

The last meal I had there was a rib of beef, shared between two, cooked on a hot piece of metal over an open fire, with some potatoes on the side (also cooked over open fire) - pretty sure it doesn't get much more basic!
They do also have a "restaurant" and I am sure that probably has a fancier menu too

Sprowston Manor Hotel????
Your parents could also have a swim/ sauna/ steam etc.
Look for the .pdf menu on their web site.
The 1559 Lounge is a bit more formal inside the hotel but the Zest Bar (which is in the grounds) is a lot less formal.
Or stay there and they could eat at The Blue Boar which is literally a 1 minute drive from there.
I know the owner very well and he would bend over backwards to make sure your parents were well looked after.
Let me know if you need any more info.

I used to work at DH, it was a bit tired when I was there (2011/12) but the hotel has since been taken over by a new owner and they've done a lot of work freshening the place up.I have the same probs as your father, mine being due to serious health problems.

The Pigs
Byfords
The Feathers
^those are the usual candidates, The Pigs usually is booked up for months though.
We recently stayed at Congham Hall (near Sandringham) after our wedding, around £220 for the night but that included dinner in their restaurant (which was excellent by the way). https://www.conghamhallhotel.co.uk/
