I have to go London to Lowestoft (Carlton Coleville) on Saturday 20th and was wondering how busy the A12 will be around noon to early afternoon and then early evening coming back. The alternative I'd thought of is going round the A14-A140-A143-A146 but will that be just as busy or will everyone be inside by then?

Usually that time of day will be clear when you're going but there may be some traffic on the way back.
The definite time to avoid is on the Friday early afternoon and into the evening.
However, having just looked at the map your alternative route should be fine and take about the same time.

I've been using the A140-143 route going to Gt Yarmouth and actually prefer it as you can overtake a lot easier so may just go that way anyway.

A140 - A143 is okay, obviously take the A146 past Beccles and you're straight into Carlton Colville.

Alternatively, if you preferred to stay on the A12, I wouldn't think the traffic will be bad until you hit a mile or so from the entrance, so you could "hang a left" after Blythburgh onto the A145 and skirt around the back coming in on a nice country road to finish (about 100m from my house)

It depends slightly on whereabouts in Carlton Colville you want to end up though, as there are two parts (old and new)

Thanks for that, we may actually be going straight to Lowerstoft (Pakefield) first so I will use the A140-143-146. I hate the A12 at the best of times and don't want to risk sitting in too much traffic from Ipswich.

Probably best.

If I go to London, I go to Norwich first, then down the A11 instead of using the A12, so know how you feel!

Trouble for me going M11 is it can take an hour to get through the Blackwall tunnel on a Saturday then there's the road works at Elveden. I will check the various traffic sites before I leave and make a decision then.
