My car needs a good polish. Had a Google and found "Pro-shine" near Halfords. Seems it'll be around £65-75 for a full machine polish. Does this seem about right and are there any other companies to consider.

I hate just using the first company I find without knowing anything about them.

I use pro-shine to clean my car, usually their 25 quid valet.

They're good but its not a detail as such, they clean cars for all the garages on that estate which is the bulk of their business.

I have Cambridge Autogleam come up once or twice a year to give it a proper detail as well. Nathan does a fantastic job but that comes with a price.

I use Stuart at VDS. Wouldnt trust my pride and joy to anyone else . He is pretty well OCD. Not cheap but the best.

I should mention my car is a MK2 MR2. It's not worth much so I'm not planning on spending big bucks on a full detail.

It has the odd stone chip and a 2p sized dent on the rear quarter. These don't particularly bother me and as far as I'm concerned, come as standard for a car this age/price. However the car is black with plenty of swirl marks and the paint just looks dull. This is what I'm looking to correct. Every time I wash my car and then wipe my chamois over it, it's the dullness and the swirls that I notice. Just a good cut/polish all over should make all the difference as there's barely any scratches or marks that this wouldn't remove.

Not really sure what to expect though as I've never used this type of service. Is there much difference in companies like car washes? One is an expensive professional but you get 2 bucket method, OCD man doing it. The other is a fiver and some Polish bloke rubs grit into your paintwork using dirty water.

One thing that you can be sure of. The Japanese don't put too much
paint on their cars and what there is, is pretty soft. So, whomever
you give to, they need to know what they are doing! A paint depth
gauge is going to be a must, plus a whole range of pads and potions.
The latter to find the least invasive way of getting rid of the
swirling. That's before you get to the protection bit...

Regards,
Steve

After meeting Stuart at VDS he seems to be the chap to use! Expensive, yes, but as someone already mentioned, he's got a touch of OCD about him which I like a lot! Just waiting to get my wheels and paint sorted on the RS4 before I hand it over to him for a day! smile
