We are potentially considering a move down to the Cambridge/Bury St Edmunds/Colchester triangle, ideally with half reasonable rail links (no issues with living a few miles from a mainline station and driving to it) to London, country location preferably a small village but access to larger towns within reasonable driving distance, not a scummy area but reasonable rental prices. I'll also be looking to rent some kind of workshop/storage space which is key to the move.

Any suggestions?

Don't expect to commute into cambridge station to get into London, the traffic into cambridge is a nightmare. although stations like whittlesford etc south of there are easy to get into to town.

I lived in Newmarket, could drive to whittlesford in 25 mins, the have a 1 to 1.5 hour train ride into either kingsx or Liverpool st.

Bury st Edmunds is useless for connections into London, shame as its a nice town.

I just moved to gt blakenham (south east suffolk), easy to get into London on the Norwich Liverpool st line. Problem is its REALLY expensive. Nearly £100 peak day return. I catch a train from needham market (free parking) then change at Ipswich for train in.

Stowmarket has developed as a London commuter town.

Manningtree has trains into town, and has some nice surrounding villages, but again on the expensive line.

Never under estimate ease of parking at station.

If you want your money to go further, then consider Diss and the surrounding area. As you get a hell of a lot more property for your money around there, compared to stowmarket, Ipswich, manning tree Colchester, further down the line.

What he /\ said. However Cambridge traffic is only a problem between 8am-6pm. If you are commuting into London in the morning it isn't too bad. e.g getting the 7:15am train. The train is 45 mins into Kings Cross (Liverpool Street one takes a bit longer). Parking at the station is a nightmare. If you are going after 9am don't even bother as there will not be a space. There is a multi-story car park near by but at £20 per day you won't want to be parking there!!

Sudbury has a good link to Mark's Tey which goes to Liverpool Street. That might be an option.

For 'nice' you'll be wanting to be more at the Mistley end of Manningtree. East Bergholt is very nice if you can afford the Constable Country Tax.

Sounds like the Sudbury branch like is right up your street. Lots of nice villages around Bures, Alpheton, Jenny, Earls Colne, Little Cornard etc etc.

Have a look at Woodbridge, Suffolk. Absolutely fantastic town, really quite special in my opinion. I am however slightly biased.

Agreed - moved from Norwich to Eye a few years ago when the missus of the time got a job in Ipswich... Ultimately didn't suit us, as we missed living in a city too much (and the last pub in the town shut the day I moved in!), but in many ways it was fantastic: property good value, quiet, lovely pubs in the area, great local butchers, decent supermarkets/ train to London just a few miles away in Diss and a good base to access Norfolk/ Suffolk/ Essex/ Cambridgeshire from!

Norwich is a good place to be, at least I'd have another MG guy to talk to, easy train journey to london, Snetterton on your door step.
I'm looking to move to a large place well a two bed house and 7 car + garage are my ideals.

Norwich has been recommended by another friend Shaun, but to be honest it's just a bit far out for us.

Woodbridge is looking good and is on the list of places to visit.

Do the connections work in your favour or do have to hang around a fair bit? My wife goes into London 3/4 times a week and I drop at Stowmarket in the morning (as I head off to Cambridgeshire) and pick up in Ipswich (we live very close by you!) Cannot say I have seen the Alfa about!

No it's really good on the timing. Only have to wait 5mins in Ipswich, for the connection between the needham train and the Norwich London bound train. And always found a seat, really easy station to get to, free parking.

I live down near the village hall, so the Alfas tucked away.
