Simple question, how do you pronounce the river Nene? Look East have been getting it wrong for years, I'm just wondering how many PH'ers mispronounce it too...

You can't mispronounce, it depends where you live. It changes from Nen to Nene about 30 miles from its end. In fact, there is one street where numbers 1-7 call it Nen, 8 onwards call it Nene.

Actually, of course you can mispronounce. There is a community on the Northamptonshire border that call it the Nun. That's because in that stretch there aren't many fish.

There's also a German community in Northants that were told never to cross it. They refer to it as the nein.

Not really surprising on an East Anglian thread. I guess the opposite would be the result if the poll were on the Northamptonshire forum?

I was born a few hundred yards from the River Nene (pron. "Nenn") in Northampton and within smelling distance of the Phipps Brewery by South Bridge! beer

HTH !

It's definately Neen.

If it was Nen, it would be spelt Nen. Just like ten, if you put an e on the end on ten, it isn't ten anymore.

I thank you.

But this is the English language, innit? Since when has spelling had much to do with pronunciation? I give you: though, bough, through, thorough, cough, thought.

Enough? smile
