Morning all,

As a school governor, our little village school has a budget to build a new classroom to replace one of the aging portacabins.

However, the builders that have quoted are charging a hell of a lot for 'welfare and accomodation'.

To try and reduce these costs, we have challenged ourselves to see if we can source equipment and materials at a zero or close to cost.

Would there be anyone who could lend, rent or provide a portable site office or similar for the summer holiday period. Also looking for the usual stuff like Portaloos..

We have taken 5 years to save up for this build as the school deperately needs it and it would be a huge shame to have to cancel due to missing the budget by a few thousand pounds.

Any help would be gratefully received and I may be able to swing a few free 'passenger rides' at the Charity Race Experience at Snetterton in November to the helpful party.. wink

Thanks

Kev

Would you be willing to tart one up a bit? At work we have a client with a yard full of them, some clearly not brand new but for a not particularly big project they could be more than adequate. They also run the lorries that transport them.

Whereabouts is the school?

Just a bit of lateral thinking – any reason why they can’t use the classroom that’s going to be replaced?

The school is in Wreningham just over the road from Lotus at Hethel.

The current classroom has all the furniture and school equipment that will be going into the new build so no room for builders stuff unfortunately.

As a school governor as well I can share your pain.

We currently have a two classroom newbuild going on and also have two portakabins due to be sited; the next few weeks will be busy.

Taken that your existing classroom has all the gear in - but now school is finished can't it be stored in the main building allowing the builders to use the portakabin while they finish off your newbuild?

Unfortunately, due to coming in our our budget and not being able to reduce it, we have had to put the build on hold.
As a Governor, it was a very hard decision to pull the build.

On speaking to builders and asking for a cost of building 42sq mtrs, they all came back with 'around £1000 per sq mtr'.....however, when we then aksed them to tender, the costs became £2000 per sq mtr.....eek

So more fund raising is needed to be able to meet these new costs...

Good luck with your builds. Exciting times when the children get back from holidays then...

From an advice point of view, the following may help, we do a lot of school work (i have 11 running at the moment)

Legally, they require toilet facilities, a drying area hot and cold water and somewhere to heat and eat food. We usually give schools the option of providing this, which keeps costs down. A full blown Garic welfare unit which ticks all the right boxes is £450 delivery/collection and £430 a week hire. If their welfare costs are more than that, they're ripping you off.

£2000 a m2 is stronging it as well if its basic classroom space.
