Best route from Norwich to the Lake District?

Hi guys, after opinions from people who have done this journey. All the online tools are saying A17, but we all know that is the road from hell.

Was thinking A14 then straight up the M6?

Any ideas?

I did this route regularly for nearly 8 years!!

It all depends on what time you set off. I used to go A47, A17, A1 and then cross country through Harrogate for some good twisty roads. If i set off at 3am on a Friday morning, with a bit of "spirited" driving, i could get to Dalton in Furness in around 5hrs 30mins, which was 290miles give or take.

I then started to go A14, M6 and even though it's 335miles, the trip would take the same time. However certain times the M6 is an absolute nightmare, i think my worst was nearly 8hrs.

The other route could also be a pain as if you are stuck behind a lorry there are places where you can't overtake for miles but it can be more fun.

I used to have to go up the A1 from Norwich for work. I prefered going A11, A14 then north on the A1 rather than A47 and A17. About the same time but easier drive, so that could be an alternative.

Hmm im thinking A11, A14, M6 but ive heard bad things about the M6.

Again, timing is the key. Anytime on a Friday after about 9am can be a nightmare, early Saturday morning not too bad. Once you get up towards Preston it's ok.

Often have to use A17/A1 for work and visiting the outlaws in the NE. If I think A17 is going to be busy I carry on the A47 from Kings Lynn to Peterborough then pick up the A1 there; its about 15-20 miles further but takes about the same time
