Good afternoon fellow EA PHers

I posted the message below in the Ford section, but wanted to put it here too and ask if any of you local (Gt Yarmouth / Norwich) chaps got any recommendations for a decent garage in the area? Just in case I end up needing one, which I fear I will.

The girlfriend's Fiesta (Flame 1.4 on an '04 plate) has decided to leak coolant. It's only a slow leak at the moment, but obviously it needs attention. I've read a bit on the net about thermostat housings and o-rings failing and I'm fairly sure that this is the problem, because it's in the right area. Would it be a bad idea to try fixing this with a bottle of Radweld? A friend and fellow PHer suggested this, but that was before I tracked it down a bit better. Would it be a waste of time? Could it possibly cause more problems?

Any thoughts and / or advice will be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Matt

Good morning and thanks for the replies.

byt, is it really just a ten minute job? I have very little experience with pulling cars about and as a result, I'm not particularly good at any of that stuff. I don't suppose you know roughly how much parts would cost do you? I assume that, even if it's just the ring(s) I may as well have the thermostat and housing changed while I'm at it?

Kit here

The engine I "think" is based on a Zetec so this guide should be helpful.

doesn't look too hard but if you're unsure a garage shouldn't charge too much to do it. Don't know of any in your area though.

being a plastic housing it's quite normal for them to crack, recntly did one on a golf (very similar) parts came to about £20 including the anti-freeze and it took longer to re-thread the hole in the head in which the bolt snapped off than to do the rest of it. I would say it should take no more than 30mins for a basic mechanic as long as the bolts aren't corroded, if they are take it to someone who can tap a thread if it's needed.

By the sounds of it you've got this sorted but if you do need a hand I'd be happy to help out one evening in the farm workshop. I'm just near Acle.

you are prolly a lot better suited to help than me as I'm in Long Stratton so the cost of fuel will be more than the cost of the parts thanks to the greedy b*****ds that ruin, I mean run our country

Glad to hear it's sorted it! It wasn't quite the straight forward job we thought it'd be but we got there in the end. I'm always happy to help, the beers are going down very nicely!

Fiddly little bugger of a job in the end wasn't it.

I wasn't sure if you got my email yesterday (seem to have emails going missing quite a lot at the moment), so wanted to say thanks again on here to make sure - which also serves the purpose of letting everyone know what a thoroughly decent chap you are!

Glad you're enjoying the beers - you definitely more than earnt them!!
