Air Con con....recommend me a specialist
Discussion
Right, wife's Disco 3 needed a service and an air con regas.
When she went to collect, the service had been done but the company say it doesn't need a regas but the pipework from front to back unit has a leak so needs replacing. !!!!! WTF.
How does a leaking air con system NOT need a regas?
Anyhow, not only do they want to charge £700 for a service complete with new discs and pads but they are saying that the body needs to come off to gain access to the pipes.
They are quoting £900 for 20 hours work plus parts WTF...
The air con pipes come as a pair from LR and cost £139 plus VAT and should take 3-4 hours to do. The inner wheel arch on the passenger side needs to be removed as the pipework is held in place by a bracket behind this. It traps water and then eats its way through the lines thereby causing a leak.
If I had the time and tools, I'd do the bloody job myself.....
Does anyone have any recommendations for an Air Con company in or around Norwich that might be able to do the job without wanting to bend me over the car and shaft me hard.....
Kev
Hi kev, normally if there is a leak a system won't recharge because it can't withstand the high pressure the system is under.
So the pipes take 3-4 hours to replace, but then there's an extra 20 hours to remove the body???
Doesn't sound right to me. I'd be calling another LR dealer to confirm?
Did they explain why the body had to come off? Is it purely for access? Seems a bit extreme? Surely engine dropped down would be possible??
Just some thoughts.
In regards to a specialist: peter is based in poringland (let's face it probably knows the red vxr8). He does an excellent job. We used him for spares when I was at Stratton and he fitted a conversion kit for us while I was at Mazda. His website is http://www.emperor-aircon.co.uk.
Hope this helps,
all the best,
Tim.

Might be worth talking to David at Autotest on the airport industrial estate.
He sorted out my dads merc air con, and does all the re gas and servicing on my S4 and my wife's GTi.(As well as all servicing and MOT's)
Mention my name if you speak to him (Matt with the black S4) we spend far too much money per year with him!
I really trust him and his employees.

I used Coldlink http://www.coldlink.co.uk/ on the Tharston industrial estate in Long Stratton when I had no end of problems with my peugeot's aircon (had been left sat for 12 months & had a hole in 1 pipe). I was a poor student at the time & don't recall their prices being too bad, we supplied the pipes and they fitted tested & regassed.
Tim,
This is at a well known independant mate......wouldn't go to a Stealership as they would rape me before I even walked in through the doors...
I have spoken to others who own Disco 3's and some have twin air con units. One for the front and one for the rear. The twin pipes link the two units. They are mounted on a clamp just behing front passenger wheel and get the full force of road crap. The bracket rusts and then takes the lines with it. From other owners experience, the work takes 3-4 hours and the parts cost £139.
How they can justify saying the body has to come off I dont know. As my wife took the car in and dealt with them, I hope its not a case of fobbing off a female as 'they don't know better'......
Thanks for all the recommendations. Will do a bit of ringing around today and see when I can get booked in.

Wonder if it's the same 'specialist' that seriously pissed me off a few years back. We'll have to compare notes next time we meet.
