We love Lowestoft, have been many, many times, with the kids, without the kids and before the kids were...well...kids!!!
Not long back from a wee break there, this time we noticed Chavs, Scummers, Ne'er do wells, you know what I mean. Gangs of late teens/early 20's who look like they are up to no good, shouting and screaming, drunks who make the place look and feel unappealing (I had one who was clearly worse for wear approach me and ask me to put suncream on his face!!).
Now, I am no Snob, I live in Basildon and am well used to Chavs, Lowestoft was different to Southend, we have a different view now!
What has happened? Any views?

I don't want to cause any offence, I know my hometown is a stehole, perhaps thats why we love Lowestoft so much!
Was just wondering if any locals knew the reason for the influx of Chavs? Perhaps we've just been lucky in the past?
Oh and before you say, yes we are visitors too and locals most probably look at us as that and we are alien to them!

You need to head a few miles along the coast from Lowestoft to Yarmouth, will make Lowestoft feel like Monaco
Fixed thatLowestoft seafront / town centre does get very 'chavvy' now, especially during summer.
There are still nice areas though. South Lowestoft and Oulton Broad are still fairly pleasant places to go out drinking.
A number of years ago, it was rumoured that the council was paying outsiders money and offering a nice home to the offending chav's parents also the councils that originally housed them assisted them on there way to where LOWESTOFT.
Now I have had encounters with them but as there were more interested in the noise coming from my car, more of appreciation society lol! they had not seen tripple webers !!!!
Yer its sad to say but Lowestoft is in parts out of bounds but the seafront and Broads areas are still fine, just stay away from car parks after closing time.
I don't think any place is free from them now. Just wish they would dress different it would make them at least slightly more acceptable, as we all petrol heads even if they drive saxo's

Like Birds in the winter, all the wasters and families with six generations still in education have flown south from Yarmouth, and ruined what was once more upmarket Lowestoft. They're also invading Cromer, a place i'm particularly fond of. If they go any further north, i'm starting a cull!
As mentioned, I think Lowestofts problem was/is the unemployment, which has brought us the generation of breeding rats that live off the state. We travel reasonably often to get fish and chips and I've got to admit that quite regularly I've watched with dread as groups of undesirables approach. We've never had trouble and if people do stop to talk about the car then they are always nice it's just the anticipation of what might come.
Yarmouth seems to have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years. 10 years ago it was awful but seems to have upped its game, if you take it for what it is then it's not a bad place to visit. I'm starting to fall out of love with the likes of Southwold, Walberswick, Aldeburgh. We've been visiting them for the last 15 years and the influx of Sloany towny pricks that take over, then look down their noses piss me off far more than the chavs of Lowestoft.

I grew up slap bang in the middle between Lowestoft and Yarmouth. They used to be fine for drinkning between 1998 and around the time I left in 2003. Since then I have only been back to visit friends and both places have become a lot worse. I was glad when my parents moved house but I have some great childhood memories of both towns.
Lowestoft is decent enough, but the single one place i'd avoid is the town centre itself. It really is a generic pile of tat, with some of the ugliest people in existence strutting their stuff on a daily basis.
Even Kirkley (London Rd South) is better than the town centre now, although it's a place i'd avoid once it's dark.
The actual beach, south of the Claremont pier, is a delight though. Get into Pakefield and it's full of retired people, who in my experience don't hang around in gangs, well, at least not gangs wearing hoodies.
The town has lost a few 'major' employers over the last few years, so people with money move on, chasing the money, house prices drop, as few can afford, undesireables move in.
I live on the edge of Carlton Colville, easy access to Norwich, Southwold, Walberswick and Aldeburgh, some of the nicest places about. Can't afford to live there though!
Southwold and Aldeburgh are ghost towns in the winter now though, a substantial amount of the properties are owned as second holiday homes. Busting to the gut in summer.
Back to Lowestoft, and it needs some serious investment by someone, the land along the quayside is lying derelict, and is prime, but who's got the guts to throw the initial investment in?
One day.

We normally stay at the Hatfield, I know it's not the best but it's cheap and cheerful (I even managed to blag on of their suites for the price of a family room this time around ). The parade of shops around there is a delight (Kirkly I think?), however one of the pubs had a big sign on the door regards zero tollerance to illegal drugs!!! The beach north of Claremont pier needs some work, I think it was last year they were working to move sand from further south, this doesn't seem to have worked as most of it has washed away. South of the pier though is lovely, without the kids we could easily walk all the way to Pakefield.
It's not the place thats the problem, is a great location to explore the east coast, we visited Cromer, Happisburgh, Southwold and Kessingland this time around. It was just the people that left a bad impression, never before in Lowestoft have we felt, whats the word...worried...concerned...hmmm I'm struggling to find the right words, put it this way, we used to allow the kids to play in the arcades alone without worrying, this time we did.
Oh and Dirty Boy, I have plenty pics of my two kids playing on Lowestoft beach, they love the place too

London Road South has always been bedsit land with drunks. But yes, it is getting a right sthole.
The local council has had a housing drive to move some of the 'problem' families down from the north (Liverpool etc). Trouble is they ARE problem families.
What IS happening is the local young families are moving out (normal these days in all areas) and being replaced by 2nd/3rd home owners or others that move in and THEN try to change what they 'think' Southwold should become. These are the ones that really, really piss me off!
Southwold has 80% plus holiday homes. A good example of this is TESCO. They sent out 1000+ letters, they got less than 100 back. 80+% of these were in positive light. Truth is, that I suspect all the other letters went to empty holiday homes.
I feel sorry for any child growing up in towns now as there are NO locals left or are geriatric. Southwold used to be called "Gods waiting room".
What is happing now is that villages further out from Southwold are now gaining in price moving people even more further afield.
Out of all the school friends I know only ONE still lives in Southwold.

I think its more of an influx rather than the real locals to be honest. Lack of local industry is forcing the (ex) working people to move out leaving a gap. I was born in Reydon (next to Southwold) and I too have noticed that. I would not say that I am MORE pissed off than the chavs but they have really killed the seaside town. Southwold/Walberwick were these places that were discovered by driving about, but now are over subcribred/over populated with way too many housing plots cashing in on that golden egg ruining what they were trying to get away from in the first place. What IS happening is the local young families are moving out (normal these days in all areas) and being replaced by 2nd/3rd home owners or others that move in and THEN try to change what they 'think' Southwold should become.
