Just out of interest, who here races (At any kind of level) and where do you do it?

I'm hoping to buy a track car soon and get out there more, so i'm interested in who else enjoys it.

I race a Caterham in the Academy Championship, also means I end up doing quite a lot of track days in it.

Also doing to be doing a drag, top speed and sprint in the GTR this summer.

What you thinking of doing? Racing or trackdays or both?

TVR tuscan, TVR tasmin, both used in the TVR Tuscan challenge. VX220 Turbo in build not sure on series yet but Britcar or GT cup most likely.

I'd love to do that, but REALLY can't afford it at the moment.

It's my ambition once my girls fly the nest! A bit of drag racing is on the cards later in the year, but that's pocket change as long as I don't break something! smile

Ha ha ha, that's what I said when I first started drag racing 18 or so years ago... Believe me it can get real addictive real quick and real expensive..

750MC Locost when I get the chance.

It's a good series with full grids and well policed rules which help to keep the price down. Open rules sound attractive but tend to mean open chequebook; it doesn't matter if your tyres have no grip if everybody else is sliding round too.

The other good thing about Locost is the relative lack of bodywork which means they're cheap and easy to repair. At least compared with hatches etc.

Formula Vee is also worth a look for similar reasons. The MR2 series also has excellent close racing but there tends to be a little too much panel damage for my liking.

If you want to go really cheap, there's always Moped Mayhem.

yikes It will only be in the daily, so I can't go mad with the mods that usually eat all the money up. more of a social thing with others on the forum really. Mind you, I do have an addictive personality and a very competitive streak! Maybe I should......getmecoat

In that case what about hillclimbs or sprints? Less chance of binning the car and you don't need anywhere near the level of modifications though a bolt-in cage and plumbed fire extinguisher may be necessary.

There's also a series run by MSV which is closer to road-going but will still need all the safety work.

I love the idea of sprints and hillclimbs, and have got a speedscene magazine subscription. There doesn't seem to be much local action though? I'm surprised you think there's less chance of binning the car compared to a straight line drag race, what's the logic behind that? confused

Sorry, I was comparing it with circuit racing. Yeah, until you get to big power I'd be surprised if you could crash a car in a straight line. Bet it's been done though. I can't help thinking the drag strip really does need a big chequebook in the quest for ever more power.

True, hill-climbs in East Anglia aren't that common. I think Javalin organised a sprint at one of the airfields and there have been a couple at Hethel. Often they're organised by local clubs.

Autotests are another cheap sport and pretty widespread. There are certainly grass-track races in EA, not sure where though.
