The bit with the variable speed limit or is it? Does anybody know if the average speed cameras are working, or the ones on the gantries. Are either of them linked into the variable limits? And are the limits variable yet - whenever I see a 40 limit, I never see a deristricted sign at the next gantry to say we're back to 50. So in all honesty I dont know what the limit is that I'm breaking or if I'm breaking one.
It's a complete mess!

Are they going to have both? Some gantry cameras are just by the average speed ones.
But more to the point are the speed signalling gantries supposed to be working? I've often gone through and see a 40 limit then a dark gantry then another 40 limit then several dark gantries. So where does the 40 start and where does it end?

This is getting silly now, 40 (electronic display) no red circle and 50 for the temp camera's. Highway code says follow the lower limit but the 40 had no red circle. The site that shows info on the finished project uses red circles in the graphics. So I am assuming they are testing and the 50 (with a red circle) on the old fashioned is the limit until the red circle appears around the 40 on the gantry.
This may be complete bowlacks.

Why do people make such a big deal about the speed limit through that section of motorway? It's 50mph. The 40 mph signs on the gantries are advisory signs but they are not enforceable.
The cameras are there to deter people from breaking that speed limit. If they don't go over the limit, they won't get caught, if they do, there's a chance they will.

They will be enforcable as I understand it and the variable camera's in the gantries will be live. The camera people have done people in error in the past and left it up to the "convicted by post" to find out and ask for it to be overturned. Several thousand I believe. I would rather know a date they go live and are they going to be the red circle version. Maybe a better google will show up what is happening. But what is happening is people are all over the place with the speed. Its a mare in a limited van when numpty is occupying the middle lane at 40.The cameras are there to deter people from breaking that speed limit. This should answer most of your questions.

If it is displayed within a red circle then it is a speed limit and should be adhered to.
If it is in Orange with flashing amber lights then it is only advisory and not enforceable.
Hope this clears things up.
For the record, while the 50 mph physical limit signs are up, that will be the speed limit. When they are removed, that will instigate the speed limit being displayed via the gantry signs.

Ah. Cheers for the link TheCrowman. Would have got round to it. I half expected the assembly to forget the red circle for some reason
So. They are correct. Still does not stop the loons in the middle doing 40. Our vans are limited so cannot use the outside lane on a 3 lane M way. You need the patience of a saint with this lot.

perhaps they make a big deal because its a big wide motorway and as such should be 70mph not a cash cow camera'd 40/50 limitThe cameras are there to deter people from breaking that speed limit. If they don't go over the limit, they won't get caught, if they do, there's a chance they will.

I think reverting back to NSL is a smart move on this road. But why so long ?
I'm told that apparently due to an admin error the new concrete barriers put in place were only rated for 50mph, hence they're had to re do that work.Nice to see it's finally coming along and looks like we'll be able to NSL very soon as I notice most if not all the avg speed cameras between malpas and jct 28 have been taken down and the 50mph signs on the carriageway removed. In fact I went on there this evening and most people already seemed to be bombing along at 70mph+
