Anyone switched over to snow tyres?
Had the wifes jag fitted with four winter snow/ice tyres today, firstly got the car off my drive then got stuck in the street shoveled a strip to get going ,Got the car to the main road fine all the way to bryncethin (tyres r us) tyres fitted .
Coming back main roads fine again got into the side streets, up a hell of a hill to my street the traction light did not flicker once the car has performed all day without spinning once ,Iwould definitely recommend getting your car kitted out in these, they have transformed my car and for less than most peoples excess

i did a bit of reading up on here when we had the first load of snow a few weeks back, but just havent managed to get a spare set of wheels for mine. Worth the investment though it seems.

I had Kumhos on my Golf which were as useful as polished granite and made the car a liability. Just swoppped the fronts for some Dextero tyres and the capability has been transformed - straight up our mountain road without incident where the Kumhos would simply have had no grip.

Still summer tyres. Just way better in snow.

Previously I've used Michelin Alpin and found them very good ( if not cheap!) Changed over to Pirellis this time ( Sotto Zero) and they are excellent.
I live in the middle of nowhere, so getting the road gritted is a complete non-starter.

One other point which I think might be worth making is that you often see cars which for summer(normal) use are fitted with big wheels and low profile tyres and that's then replicated when owners fit winter compounds.

I know it entails extra expense but if it's not too much of a stretch, it can be worthwile buying a separate set of rims which enable you to go down a few wheel sizes and fit deeper profile winter tyres that will be much more effective in snow than low profile tyres

Been using Conti snow tyres for 4 years during the winter on my legacy bought 'em in france when on skiing hol [much cheaper there and you can buy real Snow tyres not the crappey M&S sold in UK - IMO it's a no brainer.
Great fun watching everyone else struggle when you blast past 'em all, but the best bit is the quizzical look on he neighbours face when I don't have any problems whilst they all struggle like muppetscool
