A bit of exhaust pipe plus weld cheap.
Discussion
My Golf GTI back box fell apart last night and as it is a bangernomic car, I'm looking for somehwere cheap to simply bend a piece of straight pipe and weld it on with an appropriate hanger(s). Doesn't seem very loud without the back box. I haven't been under it yet but think the box has severed at the rear where the pipe joins the box. It was only a matter of time.

where the hell did you get that quote from, a dealer?!?
i picked up a backbox for my old GTI at superspanner, just off a470 in whitchurch for about £15 iirc
Internet site. I'll pop into superspanner but I'm not convinced the bit it clamps onto isn't rusted to buggery too. Still, the rear box is off and there's a wire coathanger supporting the truncated tail. I wonder if that expalins the speed-related woo-woo sound I've been getting....probably not.i picked up a backbox for my old GTI at superspanner, just off a470 in whitchurch for about £15 iirc
Just to update this, I bought a backbox from Super S****** which took ages due to all the snow but I "did the right thing" and waited as I'd ordered it. It looked crap and by god, it was crap - looked like it had been made by a trained marmoset - even the dual outlets were wonky.
I fitted it and after all the hard work of ensuring it located properly, the inlet to the backbox was clearly far too large and at an annoyingly slightly wrong angle and while I tried a bit of exhaust paste and a good stout clamp, it was like trying to put an elephant broken leg cast on a dog and soon, the damn thing slipped off and melted the lower trim on the back bumper for good measure.
So I'd avoid it.
To add insult to injury, Charlie is going to make and fit a straight pipe for £45 next week which I know will be a proper job.
False economy - best avoided if you don't want £35 of scrap metal on your car.
