17 in October.. Need Car advice.
Discussion
Living in Rogerstone at the moment, and I'm driving next month.
I was looking for good first cars, preferably ones which will look nice after a bit of modification, or perhaps none if the car is nice enough stock..
I've been looking at the old shape Ford Fiesta Zetec S but can't seem to find any solid specs.
Also like the Honda Civic Type R, also old shape but I know insurance would be pricy, or perhaps impossible.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Rob.

Firstly, what is your age Rob? This will basically define what cars are going to be available to you through insurance groups.
You stated that it will be your first car, from the statement I assume you are young in which case forget the Civic type R or anything simular.
Give the forum a little more information and I'm sure there will be plenty of sound advice.

Put in the title, should've made it more clear. my apologies.
I'm 17 in October and yeah, I was pretty sure a Type R wasn't possible, but I sure do like them.
But yeah, here's a few things I'm looking for:
- Something Stylish, either looks good stock or with a few modifications
- Cheap to run, Cheap to Insure
- Pretty Nippy when It want's to be.
any help would be great,
thanks again.

Have you even looked at insurance premiums? Anything you could afford (assuming you are a regular teenager with a regular budget) will neither be stylish or nippy! And don't think about modifying it because it will put your insurance premiums up even more.
And when it comes to insurance, make sure the policy is in your name if you are going to be the main driver. Understand that 'Fronting' is illegal see here: http://www.easier.com/15609-parents-unintentionall...
My advice would be to quickly lower your expectations, get something thats practical and safe. Enjoy driving for a year or two whilst saving up for something more to your liking. Maybe with 2 years NCB and PassPlus or other advanced driving accreditation you might be able to afford your TypeR...

Yeah, I most certaintly won't be doing any of that.. And when it comes to insurance, make sure the policy is in your name if you are going to be the main driver. Understand that 'Fronting' is illegal see here: http://www.easier.com/15609-parents-unintentionall...

Thanks for the reply, are there any decent runarounds you could suggest to me?
Seriously Rob, you have no option unless your family are loaded to stick with the lowest insurance group vehicles such as the Ford Ka like it or lump it so to speak.
My son when your age had a Ka and used it to go to Uni that way he built up a no claims discount and gradually built up enough no claims to now drive a S2000 which he bought at 22

Hopefully i can provide an idea for something
Have you thought about reno clio's? If you go for say a 54 plate 1.5dci (yes its a diesel lol) These cars are about £35 per year to tax, cheap on insurance and return huge MPG figures! They can also look rather nice from stock, being not far away from the looks of a 172 sport Im sure you can pick up a nicley specced one for under £2,000

i also have a friend who drives a 1.2 Ford Fiesta GTR and that apparantly is 1800 a year to insure which seems a little too good to be true?
Dont always think about small cars as with any small you be targeted with the boyracer image and insurance will go up i am 18 and have a mgzs that cost me 1300 to insure a year with my dad as a named driver its a 1.8 and does shift but i would also consider the zr 1.4 lighter than the zs and the power is not that much diiferent 30 bhp less

I really like the ZR, especially in yellow. how much did you pay for yours? My car was my fathers cars but now he is retired he gave the cars to me but they normaly go for around 1000-2000 for a good early one like mine which is 51 with the big spolier on the back. The zr the early ones are around 1500-2500 they facelifted it around 2004 they normaly go for around a £1000 more than the early ones get one which has already had the headgasket done they are common on the k-series engine and go around the 50,000 mile mark which was when my car headgasket went they upgradaed the headgasket so souldnt go again good cars for the money
Another idea when applying for a insurance quote is to ask for your mother or sister to be added to the policy as a named driver this usually brings the insurance down a little. Some companies such as Admiral offer the opportunity to classify each named driver. For example there is an option to name each driver to different catagories such as; Shared Driver, occasional driver etc etc

The ZS is actually the most expensive to insure (for me at least).Looking at the Zed range with the same engines, the ZT turned out to be cheaper than all of them to insure.
