What I thought was going to be a nightmare
Discussion
The locking wheel nut key broke on her indoors MX-5, I thought I was about to embark on a nightmare. However, it turned out to be a simple job.
The locking wheel nuts were McGuard high security fitted with spinners. I had read a number of posts whereby the opposite thread removal tools available were not suitable for this type of nut. However, I decided to purchase the kit and have a go all I had to lose was the 21 squid that I gave for the kit from screwfix.
I carefully chisled the spiner off the nut which was achieved in seconds then applied the removal socket which cuts a thread into the nut in the opposite direction and doing so loosens the nut. Each wheel took less than two minutes to remove the locking nut. So easy.
The hardest part was removing the old nut from the removal socket to use on the next wheel however, a grinder and vice soon sorted that out.
I now have a set of removal sockets if anyone is stuck

just goes to show unfortunatly though how easy it also is for little scrotes to nick your wheels too even if you do have locking wheel nuts on.
Well done though as they can be a complete pain i usually go with the old method of hammering an old socket over the top of them.

Agree, I had the same thought. Was wondering if it was worth investing cash in a new set of locking wheel nuts when the so called high security nuts can be removed so easily.Edited by Callyuk on Tuesday 27th July 21:37
I did consider the easiest and quickest way to remove the locking bolts was to park the car in the centre of a well known social housing estate in Merthyr Tydfil, I'm sure there would have been an experianced wheel nut remover within the vincinity
