Just been reading your other thread about switching your careers. All i can say is when i left school and wanted to start an apprentaship in the motor mechanics i printed out loads of letters asking if oppitunities where available long with self stamped addressed envelope to get more replies, then posted them to EVERY garage/franchise that was within my traveling distance. Will be fair though out of about 30 letters only 2 came back with replies that where offering positions.
Its worth a shot and now is the best time to do it as most start taking on apprentaces in august/september.

What's your degree in mate? Assuming its not in 'Yoda Studies' or 'Beckham' is their not something more applicable you can do to earn the funds to feed your need?

I know very few spanner-men that remain enthusiastic after several years. Most of those that are work with competition or 'specialist' cars e.g. Porsches. Even then most of them just do not want to even talk about cars.

Have you thought about how you are going to live on an apprentice's wage? Unless you live with Ma&Pa and they are going to heavily 'subsidise' you then for the next few years of your life you will have jaffa-all cash to spend on your own wheels.

If you are that desperate do something automotive, I'd look to set yourself up doing something specialist, whether that means car electrics, a smart repair franchise, a coded welder, applying race graphics or turning and machining - I'm not sure. Either way there's a training element to do first but its unlikely to involve three years on a pittance.

Good luck.

The best thing about posting here is the great advice you guys give out. Perhaps remarkably I have a chemistry degree from Cardiff but that just means that there are even less jobs out there that I'm not getting. Being applying for more than a year and no replies as of yet. I think i just fancied trying something I'm interested in doing day in and day out.

Ok - just another idea for you....

You might want to have a look at food safety / quality assurance roles in the food industry. Its quite a demanding industry in terms of pressure and time, but if you are a chef then you will know something about unsociable hours anyway....

I know its not working with cars but your food and chemistry experience makes you well qualified. If you have a sensible head and work well with people too there are opportunities to earn very good money, Obviously if money is of little consequence to you then that's fair enough BUT I wouldn't want to see an enthusiast become jaded by working with cars 9-5 like some of my mates have. I think its quite sad - I've got nobody to talk to about cars... wink
