if so, do you just park up at the storey arms? i've only briefly driven past the storey arms so don't know the area at all well! but is there just a long path on the way up or what? enjoyable walk to the top...? roughly how long does it take?

thanks guys

Ross.

Yes, the track from Storey Arms up to the top is the easiest way, its used enough to be known as the 'M4'. There is a longer route, less used from Cantref, you can park up here as well.

Yes lots of times.

If you park up in the car park by the wood (about 1000 yards before you get to Storey Arms) the route is not too bad and probably better if its your first time or you arent that fit.

If you park directly opposite Storey Arms and take the path to the left of it its quite a bit steeper.

Walk up from the rear is quite stressless. Don't forget that from the A 470 road, Pen Y Fan is not the first peak.

Think this might work.
clicky

Anyway, round about there. Zoom out and all that. Been a few years now but parking was tight back then.

Think it follows the old drovers road that is on an old Roman road? At least to the pass but then you will be heading off to the peaks.

thanks, so do you park up here then?

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.850447,-3.40634...

note the weird army style guy standing there hehe and guessing there is a path. fairly sure thats pen-y-fan to the right?? (as said...not been there before!)

cheers

edit: well the peak shown here:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

and some pretty obvious paths leading to and fro. so just need to find somewhere to park near one of those paths.

thanks.

Was a good few, ahem, years ago. We drove to the end, parked up by the hedge and walked up using the OS map.

Silly question, not new at this are you?

Gotcha. Didn't want to think I was sending someone up somewhere where people have come to grief. I did prefer that way, a lot less crowded. Well, it was a good few years ago.

no worries. i always take a GPS watch with me too which has a good 7-8 hours battery life on it. plots a map of where you trundle along (although i mainly use it for running) and you can mark way-points on it so if you get lost...it's ruddy easy to find your way back. that, coupled with a map, makes finding you way a whole lot easier i can assure you! biggrin

If its across from Story Arms, wouldn't it be the A470? Anyway Ross, It is obvious when you get to the top that there is another peak, if you go down the slight incline and then walk to the top of the other, that is Pen Y Fan. If you leave early in the morning, you will have enough time to walk around the entire reservoir on the other side. That is a lovely walk. A4059 is the one you turn off the A470 just pass the other reservoir to drive towards Hirwaun. I actually thought it was that road when I looked at the picture though and not Across from Story Arms? (I grew up in that area so have an excuse lol)
