just out of pure curiosity....why is it there? there are 3 perfectly wide, normal sized, motor way lanes, no people doing repairs to the roads and so on, yet, there is a blanket 50mph speed limit, for what seems like forever. i know this has been there for a long time now, but why? i'm pretty sure it's been discussed on here before though, but i can't really remember.

it's so tempting to just acidentally remove No. plates and wear a balaclava hehe

Some of the cameras dont work at night !?!

My understanding is that it was something to do with the wrong type of barrier being used.

But the conspiracy theorists will tell you it's to do with the evil Terry Matthews and his Ryder cup !

He is actually quite a nice guy, the old man used to work for/with him at Newbridge Networks, but most of it, is to do with him, lets face it Newport is a st hole and it does need to be smartened up for the Ryder cup with all the money that is coming in.

Annoyingly though it looks like his plans will be affecting my route to and from my workshop in certain directions

I heard it was because the barrier is now a concrete barrier as opposed to the standard crash barriers that have some 'give' when hit.

How much softer a concrete barrier is at 50mph, rather than 70mph I dont know.

I'm sure I read somewhere it's conditioning us all for when that entire stretch become a variable speed limit section.

Traffic on the M42
Variable speed limits are used on the busy M42 and the M25

A high-tech system that changes speed limits in response to road conditions is to be introduced on a stretch of the M4 in south Wales hit by congestion.

The variable speed limits should be in place between junction 24, Coldra, and 28, Tredegar Park, for Newport's Ryder Cup golf tournament next October.

thanks, and welcome to PH smile

variable speed limit my arse, it's been a solid 50, how does that vary?! there is no reason for it, if anything, traffic seems to suffer for it. because it's moving slower, at 50, than at 70+. if it's slow because of congestion, it's slower than 50 anyway. morons.

Thanks for the welcome.

The point is, the variable is coming, so they claim it's in advance of the works needed to install the gantries, but also to get us used to doing 50 there, as that's what it will be at rush hour if the M25 and M42 are any indication with the same system in place. frown (often drive the M42 stretch to my folks and usually set to 50/60 unless the road is quiet).
