Guys,
I'm coming to Cardiff in January for a wedding - Obviously I will come a day early and (Weather depending) have a look at the Black Mountain.
I have plotted a route around the area using other topics etc..

Question is: Where should I stay on the night before I head in to Cardiff.
I was assuming around the Merthyr Tydfil area (not sure why I know that name)?

I just need a nice B&B or Hotel with a good pub and grub in a nice village or town.

Cheers Ben

If you fancy having all the wheels on your car the next morning I'd stay the night somewhere other than merthyr, lol.

Brecon is nice. As is Rhayader. There is a hotel on the A470 on the way into Merthyr and Llandidnod Wells has a half decent hotel. Should be a good few B+B in Builth Wells.

What is your route?

Thanks, I will look for some of those B&B's

My route (very simple) so far is:

B4519 – B4520, South to Brecon
A40 West
A4069 South with the Black Mountain to the East
A4068 and A4067 East
A4067 North with the Black Mountain to the West
A4215 SE direction

Open to suggestions but it is January and I'm not going to do too many miles in the cold.
Have been to North Wales a few times now but itching to try South of the Elan Valley.

Right, so that is starting the Upper Chapel road etc at Garth going over the range. That route is a couple of three hours ish max and is doable staying in Builth and ending in Cardiff. I would aim for Builth or Llandrindod for a hotel. The only place I have stayed in that area is Llandrindod at the Metropole. But Builth has a show ground and I am told many B+B in the area (never managed to get any digs when working there on show days).

Warning, if its icy, them are some slippery roads over the tops and even in the wet can be a tad brown trouserish at times.

There's plenty of hotels around the Brecon Beacons.
Try these:-
http://www.bearhotel.co.uk/ in Crickhowell
http://www.peterstone-court.com/ near Brecon
http://www.nant-ddu-lodge.co.uk/ Between Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon
http://www.gliffaeshotel.com/ Near Crickhowell
http://www.imperial-hotel.org.uk/ in Merthyr Tydfil
http://www.tregennahotel.co.uk/ in Merthyr Tydfil

Here's some but there is plenty of places to stay.

Just incase anybody is watching this topic...
I think I will postpone the trip this month, looking a bit on the cold side. Possibly try in the summer.

Ah, yer, that's still happening - I will just take a more direct route!
