If Scotland is too far... How about the Peak District National Park? It’s the one between Manchester and Sheffield with Buxton (quite a famous town) right in the middle.
I took the missus there about a year ago and she enjoyed it. There are a couple of famous roads in the area - the 'Cat and Fiddle' (A53) and the 'Snake Pass' (A57). Both were very good fun.
We stayed in a Travelodge near Macclesfield. I didn't really plan where to go or what to see; we just stopped wherever we felt like and grabbed some leaflets from the tourist info in Buxton.
