Anyone else starting a winter rebuild?
Discussion
Spent a little bit of time on the mk1 on sunday, in places rust has started coming through and i thought it's best to have a little work done now before it deterioates too much and panels need replacing.
Seats out -
Seat bars -
Rear panel
Lights are thankfully rust free
Removed the base of the tacky beesting arial
Removed the wiper blank and screenwash
Removed a box of excess central locking, electric window and stereo crap which had been added over the years.
Was quite surprised by how heavy the seats were, might have a look about for some lighter ones soon, also spent a little bit of time cleaning the floor out, lots of surface rust and dust, i'm not 100% sure how to lift it all up properly, sponge and water perhaps?
Welding should be done today or tomorrow and then it's time to start rubbing done all the inside of the car in preparation for paint, unsure whether to take the cage out or not, at the bottom of the B pillar where the cage meets the floor looks very fiddly to prep without taking the cage out? All ideas welcome!
I'll also be having the engine rebuilt, currently its a standard 1.8 16v from a mk2, the plan is rebuilt bottom end with lightned flywheel, knife edged and balanced crank to match, block skimmed to raise compression and edges of pistons turned down like JE pistons.
Raises compression from 10:1 to 10.5:1.
Also speaking to another chap about porting and flowing the head and inlet manifold
All said and told won't raise power by much, around 170bhp is the target, it should rev like a nutter once done though, will also be mocking up the new gearbox, driveshafts and 280mm brakes (bit of an increase from the 239's currently on there).
Anyone else planning an overhaul?

That sounds like good fun, not to say a massive rebuild Jimbo! So far this week my welder has let me down, no progress at all, have found replacement suspension, driveshafts, hubs and gearbox which is a good thing, means i can take my running gearout to mock everything up on a bench before fitting it, should help with the little niggles you come across when mix and matching parts.
