My mate from work recently took his Saab 9000Turbo to the ring, had a fair bit of work done 2.0turbo engine 250hp approx Full Aero suspension lots of little tweaks etc, anyway the engine was supposed to be bullet proof not so in this case to cut a long story short it blew up, check out the compilation video below on the ring and the engine going pop not a pretty sight!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyqt9uL6tco

That is very bad, this kind of poor behaviour on the ring can lead to serious acidents he should have got off half way or stopped and called for help !! he drove right past the half way exit then commented on it. if the engine had let go on the ring, and dumped oil all over the track there could have been a serious accident ! you could clearly tell the bottom end had gone!! just stop and call for help.....ADAC woohoo

Ben is right i sugesst you friend reads this !

http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/warning.html

Slap your Mate and tell him he is a co*k. also tell him he should never go back, until he grows up !

The ADAC will take you off the ring or take you to the ferry or tend to your breakdown all for £75
It costs around £150 to get taken off the ring if you dont have the ADAC cover.
I understand that you cannot prevent it happening, and things do go wrong, but still what a

Danny, this thread isn't making you or your mate look good. Your mate looks like the sort of unknowing dork that we all hate out there on the roads, and you don't seem to realise that.

He didn't drop oil on the 'Ring, luckily, but he did appear to lay oil on a motorway services slip road. He is a one hundred per cent total tt.

I read in Evo this month that the Polizei are planning to crack down on Brits taking their sheds and crap to the 'Ring. Apparently in Germany you cannot add anything to your car that has not been TUV approved, even applies to those drilled metal pedal pads that people like to buy, apparently.

In Britain of course, you are free to fit any old crap you like and indeed the motor trade is free to sell as much junk, st and tat as is humanly possible (it must be brilliant to have the freedom to part so many fools from their cash). In Britain you are free to spend a fortune in transforming a good car into a near-undriveable death trap, but the Germans want these people to just stay away from their beloved 'Ring.

Which seems totally right-on to me.

You touch me Danny and I'll break your arm biggrin

I'm the driver of that Saab, just thought I'd sign up and put my side of the story across.

This trip to the Nurburgring was at the beginning of September. Went with www.theminiforum.com , was aprox 60 cars with us ranging from classic Minis up to turbo'd Mk1 Astras including the more boring likes of my Saab 9000 and my mates E36 325. It's a yearly run and I'd done it the year before in my Dolomite Sprint.

"he drove right past the half way exit then commented on it"

It was a mistake, too many things going through my head at once and I didn't think about getting off half way round...

"just stop and call for help.....ADAC"

"The ADAC will take you off the ring or take you to the ferry or tend to your breakdown all for £75
It costs around £150 to get taken off the ring if you dont have the ADAC cover"

"'I know my engines knocking its t**s off ill keep going so i can spew oil out all over the place'"

Just before last years trip to the Ring it was reported that ADAC no longer recovered from the Nurburgring. So I accepted the risks, the car breaks down on the track, I'm paying to be recovered off. The car leaks fluids on track, I'm paying to get them cleaned. They really do have you by the balls when your on the Nurburgring but I know theres no getting away from that.

My car wasn't smoking or leaking oil before I went on track, it wasn't smoking or leaking oil when it started knocking. There was no way I was going to stop my non-leaking, fully functional car on the Nurburgring and pay to be recovered off just incase it did suddenly let go and it dropped oil. I knew if it leaked, I'd have to stop, warn those behind me, pay for recovery and pay for it to be cleaned up.

"Those engines are known for the oilways sludging up. guess that's what happened to this one"

It's the later 9-5s that get this problem, not the 9000s

"He didn't drop oil on the 'Ring, luckily, but he did appear to lay oil on a motorway services slip road. He is a one hundred per cent total tt"

The reason I then attempted to drive the car home is that my break down company would not recover my car back to the UK due to it being worth less than the £1500ish cost of recovery. I'm a mechanic, I know I could get a replacement engine for around £100 and fit it in a weekend. The cost of it being repaired at a garage would be around £500, engine out, take it apart, re-grind the crank, fit new bearings. The cost of being recovered to the UK by a foreign geezer with a truck was £400 So again I looked at my choices and thought about what to do...

'I'll make sure its got nice thick oil in it and try and drive it home gently, I once bought an Escort that had been driven 50 miles a day for a 3 weeks with knocking big ends, it may make it! And if it doesn't we will tow it to the UK with a solid bar behind my mates BMW. UK breakdown cover will be fine It's all motorways and if we leave at night it will be quiet if we do end up towing it'

...and that is how it all happend

So there we have it, my car died but by sheer luck nobody else did

So youd rather risk a bikers life, than pay the E150 to be recovered (or E80 for ADAC cover)

Lets not be too self righteous here! I might have done the same and I dont consider myself a complete tit - I do not want a response to this part!

If I could limp my way off the ring I would (yes, I am tight!) and the only reason Id realise I was at the mid point exit is cos I recognise Adenau (90% of the time I havent a clue where I am.

We, Mr. Grey, happily drove a de-exhausted MR2 around Llandow even tho we knew it was way out of noise limits. Hypothetically, this 'could' have generated noise complaints which 'could' have resulted in future track days being cancelled - however we did it because we are like 'daz crazy germans'!

Anyway, he might break my arm jester

Why have you assumed I'd drive off and leave the oil there? The reason a knocking engine then goes on to leak lots of oil is more often than not theres a big hole in the block, the parting shot of my video for example. I can't see a car being able to drive after that. So what would of happend if my car had let go on the Ring is there would be a big hole in the block, Id of stopped and warned others behind about the oil on the floor and the fact theres a broken car on the Nurburgring and of course waiting for recovery...
