Car just had an MOT done at the green alternative to kwik-fit as needing doing quickly for Le Mans next Thursday. All passed fine, except failed for EXCESSIVE noise!!!! Even though he said he liked the way it sounded frown Didn't even help explaining that its below acceptable limits for track use.

Not too happy - anyway, do I get a new centre box welded back in or try someone else who may have an inspector with a kinder ear?

Any recommendations? This weekend would be useful or even tomorrow...

Um? Probably excessive laugh

Problem is its straight pipes from cat-back. I think if it had a centre silencer they would have been happier to pass it.

There is no noise limit for cars but there is for bikes !

Legislation on exhaust noise was discussed at length earlier this week, here:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

Basically there is no legislation in the UK that sets a max noise limit for production cars. There is for motorbikes, and for kit cars and specials, but not for production cars.

It is an offence under C&U (I think it is) to modify the exhaust so that it is noisier than "standard". It is not an offence for the exhaust to be noisy if that is how the car was made.

My son tells me that the police around here are testing cars against a "standard database" (whose database? Don't know.) but still allowing a fair bit of latitude from the "standard" figure - so it's only the very noisiest that are at risk of serious bother.

Can the Prick demonstrate how it is too loud !! and how he took a measurment !! who is this garage ?

just chuck a big socket or bung or something temporary in it and take it back. I passed race regs for years doing this on bikes.

it'll make the car run like cr&p bup it'll be quieter!

Great to hear the Jags ready to roll........just 4 days to go woohoo.
As for the Viper...its fine, the problem has sadly been some of the scum that seem to turn up at LeMans in recent years, its for that reason and that reason alone why I don`t take Venom down anymore (been taking it since 2002). The last time I took it in 2007 it was surrounded by a load of drunks who stripped naked and sat on the bonnet, also came back to it on the camp site to find someone had spat green gob over it,and the same year just a few hundred yards away a whole line of cars on the camp site were keyed from nose to tail, my mates car was hit in the door by a low flying rocket! so as of last year I take anything but the Viper down. Its very sad that it comes to this but whilst I LOVE the drive down and back in the Viper I find the worry of "what will I be coming back to on the camp site" ruins my race weekend, I think that if the issues above continue to grow more owner of nice cars will find it untennable to take their pride/joy down. I`ll keep my fingers crossed for you and remember don`t go near Mulsanne Cafe/Bar after 4pm Friday and stay well away from Houx Annex rounderbout. Have a great weekend,Tom

There is also a regulation requiring the gases to pass through a silencer - the argument is whether a cat is a silencer or a cat....or both.

there is also a regulation concerning nuisance rather than outright noise which should require the stereo to be tested....
