So, employer has asked if I would be interested in relocating to our Bristol office. Quick scan of rightmove show much cheaper, bigger, nicer, houses in South Wales, with much nicer views and driving roads, than everything in "england".

However, short of driving down to Cardiff / Newport, then jumping on a train, all commuting options I've worked out seem to be multiple trains / 2+hrs commute. Is there any "fast" or direct train across (well, under) the severn from anywhere? Tried various options through thetrainline.com but all seem to want me to change trains at cardiff or severn tunnel junction.

Also, any general +/- on living up in Ebbw Vale etc?

Any thoughts appreciated,

Ian

I worked in Ebbw Vale for a while, and it's not the most salubrious of places, and a bit of a bh to get to. having said that the people I worked with were a decent, hard-working, honest bunch.

If your looking for somewhere to get a good cheap house I would reccommend the Pontyclun/Talbot Green/Llantrisant/Miskin area, it's about 15 miles from Cardiff, but the train from Pontyclun Station to Cardiff central only takes about 10-15mins, and the M4 is only a few mins away.

Ebbw Vale now has a direct train link to Cardiff if that's any help.

One of my uncles used to live in Chepstow and commute to Swindon on the train. He did that for six years, so can't be too bad. I think all the small towns in that area have trains direct to Bristol - Caldicot, Magor etc.

Newport will have direct trains to Bristol (both Parkway and Temple Meads stations) so that's another option. Plus living expenses in Newport are cheaper than Cardiff.

I don't know Ebbw Vale too well, but Cwmbran seems to be a nice place to live and it has a train link to Newport.

Rogiet is the village that Severn Tunnel Junction serves and is easy to commute to Bristol.
My house is also for sale on rightmove and is only 5 minutes walk from the train station.........

if its working from a bristol office forget cardiff - too far away. Communications in S Wales arent good. Newport is a dump so best solution is Chepstow. No great night life and dont forget that the severn bridge is more than £5 (round trip)but you are right about roads, scenery etc. If you can hack it there is a reliable and cheap commuter bus service to Bristol from Chepstow.

I lived in Chepstow for 10 years and wife worked in Bristol, me in Newport. If you want to chat about it, pm me
