Modified MX-5?

I've just seen a purple MX-5 around junction 47 of the M4. It looked really heavily modified. The front bumper had been cut away and replaced with some mesh and the bonnet was lifted at the front. Guessing there was something quite big under there. Looked quite interesting, does anyone know anything about it?
