I always use HSS but I would think most hire shops would have that sort of kit. You usually hire the two sanding machines together, the main big beast and a smaller disk type to get into the edges and corners. Couple of little tips - make sure all nail heads are punched into the boards and don't let the big one run while still or it'll carve you a lovely deep groove in the floor. Oh yeah, wear a mask and open all the windows, and park your car down the street.

Good luck!!

The best deals I found were with Brandon Tools just off the Gabalfa Interchange (corner of Caerphilly Road)
27 Caerphilly Road
Birch Grove
Cardiff
TEL: 02920 618223
FAX: 02920 628743

As Tony said, the two machines will be required.

More tips for you...
You will get brown paper collection bags for the exhaust dust; attach these then wrap an old pillow case over the top of these and tie it VERY VERY tight (cuts down on dust tenfold !!! )

Jumping ahead now. Everyone I talked to recommended Fiddes for post sanding woodcare, stains, wax etc etc. The are very helpful too and recommend you taking along any offcuts to test their products before buying.

Enjoy headache

I did a reasonable sized bedroom with a cheap belt sander I bought from B&Q, got through quite a few belts though, but probably still worked out quite a bit cheaper than hiring, and obviously I still have it.

You can borrow it if you want. It will however take you at least twice as long as using an upright.

Let me guess:

1. dust everywhere... and I mean everywhere... and you'll still be finding it in 6 months time.
2. grooves in your wooden floor where the sander was standing too long while switched on.
3. belts keep ripping on invisible nails
4. you're deaf because the noise is like Concorde on afterburners
5. you're body is still vibrating 2 hours after you turned off the machine.
6. you can't believe how long it's taking AND that you have to repeat the whole thing for: coarse/medium/fine grade papers AND then after you've done the first sealant coat.

If you get fed up, I have a guy from Glos. who'll sort it and much cheaper than the Cardiff people.

PM if you need contact details.

dust wasn't too much of an issue as i like to keep on top of cleaning (ok so you'd never tell by looking at my car!) so the hoover was on every 10 minutes or so. Also i did well with the belts and discs with very little usage. What did piss me off was the fact i bashed my nicely painted walls with the handle of the big one about a dozen times, i have got a few grooves where the edging sander dug in, the edger also melted the bottom of the stair carpet which is only 2 months old. And today i am punishingly finishing it off by hand especially under the radiator where the edger wouldnt reach. I haven't decided what finish to apply because i cant remember what colour my furniture is (i havent seen that in 3 months!) but hopefully that will be here tomorrow and i can finally put an end to this tedious chapter rolleyes

Worst job I've ever done. I was still blowing sawdust out of my nose a week later. I'd rather pull a lath and plaster ceiling down from above again than sand a floor with a machine.
