OK all heres the rub. For just over a year ive been restoring my 928 manual and finally got it 99% done. There will always be something to do on it due to it's age but in essence its finished. it may be time to move on for a couple of reasons, the first being that I like to have a project on the go and the second being even though its an old car its still a big V8 Porsche and is expensive to run and things are a little tight at the moment. I have always hankered after another early VW as it was my first car my dad bought me some 25 years ago. I have the chance of a 74 Karmann Ghia Coupe with a brand new uprated gearbox and turbocharged engine etc. Its not cosmetically brilliant but structurally and mechanically good. I can swap it for my car no cash either way.
The attraction for me is that it is a real sleeper, relatively simple mechanics, much more economical to maintain, needs work and I can also drag it at Shakespeare County.
Having done my research the value is about the same as no matter how much work or money I spend on my car its value is about maxed out now.
But will I regret parting with the 928 and its quality, power and standard of finish (that i have given it)?

If it is all for fun and you'll have no regrets get the Karman.
I faced a similar situation with my NSX recently but it involved a newer car 2004 and money on my side. Then I realized how much time and effort I put into making mine what it is today and could not do it.
So I am doing the sane thing ( not ) more time, money and effort into the current one, so I won't be tempted again!!!
I know it does not help, but I think any car you, me or any other serious PH DIYer has will be the same, a money, time and effort pit, or tu put it nicely, a labour of love!!!

I know the 928 is a good car but personally, it's never really done it for me in the looks department and it is big, heavy and a potential money pit.
There's something about those old Karmann Ghias though. Personally, I prefer the earlier ones which are worth more but you'll not lose money on it and as you say, it'a a bit more useable. I hate the red with a vengeance and the black roof but Buggers can't be choosers.
I think it's your call with nobody really losing either way. Drive it first though - it's so often the case that after many years the rose-tints come out....

Im a coward basically Dave on two counts. the first is because I haven't mentioned it to my wife yet because she will will just see another money pit and give me a hard time and im also scared stless im making a mistake. That being said I am sure it will be happening next weekend. Where you at Dave i'll bring it to you for you to see.
