Chaps, It's the wife's birthday coming up, so I want to take her out for a decent meal, we've not been out much since we had our daughter 9 months ago, so want to go somewhere special and push the boat out a bit, any recommendations?

Fairyhill restaurant in Reynoldston, on the Gower peninsular is nice. They do rooms as well if you're not local. Here's their web site

That looks just the kind of place I'm after. A bit far though, as I'm not sure we'd be able to stay the night. Anybody know of anywhere up to about 30 min's from Pontyclun?

Celtic Manor has a couple of good restaurants including their (new, Michelin Star) flagship, The Crown!! Tides in St Davids is also very good but haven't been there for a year or so!!

There are also quite a few brasseries locally but in all honesty, I find none are that consistent!

There's also the new fish restaurant on the A48 (where Mulligans used to be) but only been open a week or so!! Supposed to be pretty good but not tried it as yet!!

Never been too keen on big hotel restaurants, I find them too impersonal, but the ex-mulligans could defo be a goer.

Le Gallois in Canton (although not the most scenic of areas!)

The Old Post House in St Fagans

The Manor Parc in Thornhill (also have nice rooms)

I would also go with Fairyhill if you can stretch to stay there. Its only a short blast up the M4 and you could turn it into a mini weekend break.

With you on that the Celtic Manor is overated. Never been but the Foxhunter by Usk comes highly recommended.

I still think that Le Monde is still very good, never had a bad meal there, it's the original team that later went onto the Custom House and Ceasar's etc, but is better than both by some way, it's a good crack if you like decent seafood/meat, well worth a visit.

But its not exactly special is it? Its fine for a steak and chips and a decent bottle of red but its not exactly somewhere you would go for a special occassion.

Service in all of the Braz / Le Monde / Champers places can be very patchy and on the weekends they are usually full of wanabbees and ropey old slappers.

I think The Celtic Manor made a mistake by replacing Owens. Quality of food and service has fallen considerably.

Huddarts in Cowbridge is very nice. Probably the best restaurant in the area at the moment IMO.

Thornbury Castle is up there with the best but maybe a bit far.

Well that depends if you think a well cooked fillet or some decent prawns is good food or not, personally that's my bag and never experienced crap service or slappers (unfortunately!frown ), your list is not bad but I certainly wouldn't call the Manor parc special though. I've also heard that Loch Fyne is supposedly decent but not tried, Gilby's has recently changed hands as well or so i'm told which in truth might be a good thing!

I've been to the Loch Fyne in Stockton Heath Cheshire, which was very nice. Saw the one in Cowbridge this evening and will probably try it out in the next week or so.

So far as my favourites go, El Prado in Laleston for their fresh fish and their fillet steak (similar to Le Monde I suppose, I found both do horrible chips though). Zia Nina in Bridgend does the best Seafood risotto/linguine I've ever tasted.

Thanks for all the suggestions, Frolics in Southerndown could definately be on the cards, everytime we go to the beach one of us will always say 'i've heard that place is good, lets go' but we never seem to get round to it.
Other than that, quite fancy going into Cardiff centre as then I can drink as well, if we catch the train, but champers, Le monde and the other usual suspects all seem a little bit dated, are there any new places worth a go in the city center.
I've never been to Huddarts, even though Cowbridge is pretty much home turf, just can't afford to actually live there, so it might be worth a try, but it alway looks a little bit stuffy from the outside.

So far, Loch Fyne and Frolics are the front runners.
