Has anyone else noticed an increase in those speed detector boxes (you know the two lines running across the road attached to a small box) over the last month or so? I reckon theres 6 new ones popped up on the few roads i regularly use in the past couple weeks

Years ago they used to be speed detectors, but more recently I thought they were used for counting vehicles. Anyone know for sure?

Due to the price of fuel, everybody is driving slower, so reducing the amount of "safety tax".

They're probably looking for places to "make safer" with their "Think! vans.

I have noticed them, on the ST Mellons slip road, and several places through Llanrumney and Lamby way direction.

I think they usually put these down to measure the traffic flow, usually when toying with the idea of changing road layouts / control measures.

How did they ever use to measure peoples speed with them??

record the time it takes to get a signal from both cables which are set at a known constant distance. velocity = distance / time

I understand the maths behind it, just dont understand how they could have issued you with a penalty with no evidence. (markings on the road with photgraphic proof)

I think they're just for counting traffic and average speed.

i never said they were incriminating people, i assume that they are for checking to see how fast people drive on roads at what time of day etc to justify putting a gatso at its location in the future. Atleast if thats what my job was thats how i would do it boxedin Atleast i hope its not, i only have 2 to deal with on my daily commute i dont want any more!

I hope that's not the case.

I think I pass 4 sets of these on my way to work!

Strips for measuring speed are imbedded in the road and use a camera for recording any offences. Pretty rare as well I think. http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/gatso12.htm

The strips your concerned for in this case are for measuring the amount of cars passing over them. Look at the area where they meet the curb, there's a small box there that houses the recording equipment. If they are recording speed info, the box could easily be 'persuaded' to give up its data biggrin

Imagine if they were speed devices, HGV's must be at warp 9.

Think about it, two strips, trailer axles....

hate to burst your bubble, but it wouldnt need to measure the speed over multiple axles as they would be the same anyway (unless something horrific is happening) and in the case that they were measuring over multiple axles, there would only need to be one cablewink

Curses, my world domination plan in tatters.....

Thinking of the two strip jobbies and when a multiple axle goes over them. Seeing as they cannot know the distance between things.
