Hi. I'm planning a 'road trip' for a few days and am thinking of touring through Wales. Anyone know of any decent driving routes with spectacular roads, scenery and 'pit stops' for bacon butties etc. I will be coming into Wales via the M4 and want to cross from South to North, and take in some of the coast roads. Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds like you'll be coming over the Severn Bridge or down from Ross on Wye area?

Try this as a nice starter which leads off from the M4 at port Talbot.....

Leave M4 J40 onto A4107 towards Treorchy.

A4061 Treorchy to Hirwaun.

A4059 Hirwaun to Brecon.

A40 Brecon to Llandovery

A483 Llandovery to Llanwyrtyd Wells

A483 Llanwyrtyd Wells to Builth Wells

A483 Builth Wells to Llandrindod Wells

A483 Llandrindod Wells to Newtown

A489 Newtown to Caersws

A470 Caersws to Llanidloes

A470 Llanidloes to Llangurig

A470 Llangurig to Rhayader

From Rhayader (Elan Valley) you can then head off up towards the Evo triangle evil

Alternatively, from Rhayader go.....

A470 Rhayader to Builth Wells

A483 Builth Wells to Llandovery

A40 Llandovery to Llangadog

A4069 Llangadog to Brynamman

...but this does bring you back around to the direction you came from originally (roads are good though....see my new thread biggrin

Sounds pretty much perfect, I also have a soft spot for the A44 Llangurig to Aberystywth across the mountains (especially early in the morning when its deserted save for the odd Mansell Davies tanker).

An alternative route:

Go all the way along the M4 and continue the A40 going to Camarthen and Haverfordwest. At Haverfordwest take the A487.
At Machynlleth take the A493.
At the end the A493 turn left on to the A470.
Turn from the A470 on to the A496.
At Bryn Glas turn on to the Briwet bridge toll road.
Cross the Afon Dwyryd and the bear left on to the A487 going to Porthmadog.
Then take the A499/A487 to Caernarfon.
Continue on the A487 to Capel Y Craig and take the A55 and you will eventually end up in Chester.

I have done this route the opposite way round starting at Chester.

Set of Bull (or sheep!) bars seem the order of the day! Suppose I can always use them for traffic wardens in London afterwards! (only joking or course!)

Good road side delicatessen just before Libanus on the A470, weekdays. Weekends there is a different one just below Story Arms. Laybys at both.

An absolute corker of a road is Llanidloes up the B4518, turn off just past Staylittle on an un named road past Dylife through to Forge then Machynlleth. Wedge and Vixen have handled the un named road no problem, just watch out for the oddy that might scrape.

Cracking road. Brilliant scenery and a few stopping places for pics like this.

Well worth a stop for lunch. Best game pie I have ever had.

Edited to add, if you can get across to Aberdovey from Machynlleth(from the route above) then travel up to Tywyn then B4405 up to A487 or just carry on up the coast to Barmouth across the toll road. Carry on up the coast past Harlech, a superb castle and worth a stop. Then up to Portmeirion of Prisoner fame and Porthmadog etc.

Most of those roads sound like driving hell to me.

Full of plod, holiday makers, caravanners and trucks.

Believe me, I use most of them every week whilst I'm working.

You need to plan routes using B-roads, really.

I have travelled them for many years too also but you have to take the rough with the smooth. Cannot say that I have seen a great deal of plod except on weekends after the bikers but they are around. The shed draggers can be passed. And the wagons but I find the further west the less long distance stuff is around. It might be easy for us locals to nip up a short cut but not so easy for a foreigner..... sorry, the Englishsilly

The route I posted over to Machynlleth, I have never seen plod up there.

Without taking anything from the superb eatery on the weekend, the one that is there weekdays at Libanus must be tried. I think the the flavor would win.
