Ah well, at least the sun was out as I took my last drive up and down St. Mary Street in the city centre.

Cardiff Council have decided to close one of the major through routes of Cardiff and make it a bus/taxi only road.

http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=&par...

Cue: all the traffic going down Westgate Street. I'm so glad I've sold my flat there, the traffic noise and congestion was unbearable when the Fri/Sat night closures were in place, having that EVERY night of the week would be a nightmare.

They say it's "experimental".... like the national speed limit was "temporary" I suppose.

Well done Cardiff Council for another nail in Cardiffs coffin. s

Cardiff Council:

We are working to create a better place to work, shop and visit by reducing traffic, pollution and noise levels - whilst introducing wider pavements and public art to improve the feel of the area.

Translation: it'll be nicer to wander down St Mary Street when you're shopping but before long you'll have to "park and ride" from 5 miles away for the benefit of doing so. It'll be nicer to work there but not if you're in retail as the lack of customers, due to the closures, will mean you won't have a job. The congestion and pollution will be moved to a different part of the city.

The road closure, along with the mental car park prices, and the loss of 800 parking spaces around the Hayes is going to kill Cardiff. You can see the rot has already started: empty retail units in Queen Street and they haven't even finished the 120 units in St.Davids 2.

It's going to be an inconvenience if I drive to work, but I normally catch the train so it's not the end of the world. Walking down there this morning though, it already seems 10x better imo.

I don't think this one action will kill Cardiff as a shopping centre or place to visit, it may cause more traffic down the alternate roads around the centre though. On the actual notice there is an expiation that this is temporary but only until a permanent notice of change takes place, so it will happen unless something major happens and throws a spanner in the works.

To be honest its probably safer that its changed, on a Friday and Saturday night its like a slalom course trying to drive around the very wobbly, drunk people.

No one likes change smile

Have to say I used to avoid driving through St Marys Street if I possibly could so this will not impact me at all. Can understand how it might be inconvenient if it was your route to work though.

I would think the major inconvenience will be to people picking up large items from the shops which could force people out of town to shop.

Rarely drive through there myself so im not too bothered really.

But my Dad mentioned that in the sunday papers, it was something like £25 a day to park or drive through london. Locals get 90% rebate which is soon to stop and the likes of Liverpool, Birm, Manc, Cardiff etc were thinking of following.

So if this action delays or stops the charge, im all for it!

I can see why it doesn't bother you... it seems you don't visit very often: it's been closed on Fri and Sat nights for nearly a year.

The resulting chaos through Westgate Street has been hilarious.

rofl showing my age hehe(I don't get out much anymore)

If that's truely the case why is it such an issue that its being closed full stop? The other side is closed off to traffic and it's not closed all the businesses down.
Back to my initial comment, it's a change, like no smoking in public, digging up the M4, putting speed cameras in stupid places and a whole bunch of other "stuff" that we can't do much about (fuel costs, etc).

Not to mention the bus lane that appeared overnight last Tuesday and now you can't turn left down past the Hilton. Instead all the cars swerve into the middle lane. In the evenings, there are now only 2 lanes when turning left from Boulevard De Nantes thus increasing traffic congestion (in addition to the tts who get in the middle lane and wait to turn right). It's a slow cancer.

Next are £5 a day traffic meters in the Civic Centre to replace the £2 a day voucher parking. Enjoy it while you can. I predict a new boom in second-hand taxis. Better still, how much is a used Leyland Bus?

Any of you remember Queens Street before it was pedestrianised?

At one time 4 lanes towards the castle from Newport Road. Was great fun at the lights in Queen St, like the start line of the British Touring Car Championship. Step off the pavement and you were dead smile

I purposely mentioned the British Touring Car Championship, I was going to say F1 but that's just soooo boring and unexciting. I prefer syncronised swimming to F1 and watching paint dry is better than both smile

Interestingly, Cardiff was recently voted Britain's most driver-unfriendly town (City) for the second year in a row.

The award has only been running for two years! Say no more.

Can someone help me with a little problem I am going to have because of this?

I have to pick the wife up from the bus station on Friday at around 6 p.m. I usually park in the multi-storey behind the Philimonic (sp!) where you used to go up St Mary Street then turn right at what was the Great Western onto Saunders Road I think it is, how will I get to this car park now? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Buggergrumpy. Can you still turn left onto Boulevard De Nantes and then make an immediate right (thus coming out opposite the Hilton)?

It is a pain that they've closed it: St Mary's St - Callaghan Square - Lloyd George Ave was a very useful route into the bay. All that closing is has achieved is shifting most of the traffic onto the (far less adequate) Westgate St.

Yes you can still do that but there will obviously be a bigger queue waiting to cross the traffic and by the time you've done that, you could have been halfway down Greyfriars Rd the other way. Mind you, ordinary cars still flaunt it the other way with heterosexual abandon. I can imagine a camera going up there...

Those involved in the vote clearly haven't been to Swansea...

You can approach it from the south (Callahagn Sq?) - under the bridge at the bottom of St. Mary Street then turn left before Walkabout pub.

I imagine Oxford must be pretty high up there too.
