So it was my own fault, I could have stayed at home.

I appreciate that they had to close it off from Malpas to Tredagar Park, but why shut the lot off right the way through to Coldra? The SDR was gridlocked, I tried to cheat and came along the A48 from Chepstow and then sat for an hour waiting to get onto the Coldra roundabout and then escape north up the A449 (queues on the A449 south were 6 miles when I went past!). Then someone turned the traffic lights on at the Coldra and it all started to flow again.

But why couldnt they close it @ the Cwmbran turn off before the tunnels for those who wanted to get that little bit further along and then those wanting to get to Cardiff go along the SDR?

This accident had a significant impact for everyone. There are always more sides to any story but the vid from the bbc here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/nol/newsid_6920000/ne...

shows it was significant and it looks like it will cause impact until atleast Tuesday next week.

Should really also say that people make decisions based on infomation they have available to them at the time, perhaps they thought that closing where they did gave more people other options??

I think the reason the police closed it between these to junctions was to disperse the traffic in the area quicker. By sending everything up through Rogerstone & Risca & Up the A449 from the coldra, with them all being dual carriage ways, the M4 would have cleared quicker. Imagine if all the traffic was to get to malpas then up to Cwmbran & Pontypool or down through Caerleon towards Newport Town Centre where all the road works for the regeneration are taking place. The tailbacks would have probably been longer. CHAOS.

Thumbs up to gwent police on that one. Good call in my opinion.

There was a similar accident in the same place a couple of months back when a lorry jack-knifed and ripped through the central reservation. It took me 3 hours to get from junction 30 to 26. I thought that was long. Couldnt imagine staying in it for 8-9 hours as some people were reported to be doing.

Who were the dumb ass's doing 3-point turns on the contraflow in cardiff because they didnt want to stay in the jam for that long. Think of the accident that could have caused.
