I`ve been a collector of motoring books for over 20 years and have a few ideas for you. If your into the L.S.R then "Bluebird and the dead lake" is a great read about Donald Campbells 1964 speed record in Auz or Green Monster by Art Arfons (3x LSR holding in the 1960,s) this a a story of a guy who bought a "USAF classified jet engine from a F104 Starfighter that had been damaged ,from a scrap yard, took it home, worked out how to repair it, start it and fit it into his LSR car (it would be tested round the back of the garage by tethering the car with chains to trees!eek Then went out and claimed 3 Land Speed Records at over 575mph! Oh he also crashed it a over 600mph and walked away with just a few scratches!
Nuvolari by Lurani, is a fantastic read, one hell of a driver (won several GP,s races after signing himself out of hospital whilst still in plaster with broken ribs and a busted leg, got the mechanic to adjust all the pedals in this Alfa Romeo so he could used all of them with his one good foot and was then positioned in car! Then went out and won.
Rosemeyer , by Chris Nixon....the skill of this pre war 600bhp AutoUnion driver is unreal, sadly he meet his end on a 2 lane highway at the German Speed week in 1938 when his streamlined AutoUnion was caught by a gust of wind at over 270mph (yes you heard correct,,,the German GP cars with a streamed lined body could clock over 450kmh in the 1930,s on a open 2 lane highway !!eek ) He also won the 1937 Avus Grand Prix held in Germany with an "average" race speed of 172mph!(the AutoUnion was making closed to 240mph on the straights) Makes todays drivers look like whimps, not a helmet, crumple zone or armco barrier in sight!
Touch Wood by Duncan Hamilton...great book very funny, one story of the 1956 Le-Mans race where they were refused entery to the race, so driver and co - driver head off down pub to get pissed, team manager finds then in early hours of morning and tells them there "in", they decide it better to continue drinking throughout the race rather than attempt sobering up, so brandy it taken aboard the Jag D-type,....the result? They won the race! Very funny book.
It all depends "what you thing is" ......Oh , almost forgot, Perry Mcarthey book (the stig) very funny also.Hope this helps
